Steel and iron ore prices today, July 13, 2025, increased sharply thanks to expectations of new stimulus from China, while the hot-rolled coil market remains volatile. Domestically, construction steel prices at enterprises are stable, fluctuating between VND12,520 - 13,580/kg.

On the Shanghai Stock Exchange

At the end of today's trading session, the price of August rebar futures on the Shanghai Stock Exchange increased by 0.42% (13 yuan) to 3,076 yuan/ton.

On the Dalian Commodity Exchange, the August iron ore futures price rose 1.86% (14 yuan) to 768.5 yuan/ton. Meanwhile, the August iron ore futures price on the Singapore Exchange - SGX increased 0.27 USD to 99.28 USD/ton.

Compared to the end of last week, the price of steel bars on the Shanghai Exchange, iron ore prices on the Dalian and Singapore Exchanges changed respectively (+1.1%), (+3.8%), (+3.6%).

Steel price today 137 ends a week of strong increase

Iron ore futures in China surged above 767 yuan a tonne to their highest level in more than three months, driven by expectations that Beijing will roll out fresh stimulus to support the struggling property sector.

Market sentiment was bolstered by reports that the Chinese government may hold a high-level policy conference, similar to the Central Urban Work Conference in 2015. This conference emphasized the importance of promoting urban development and infrastructure investment - factors that directly increase steel demand, thereby pushing up iron ore prices, according to Reuters.

In addition, China continues to try to control overcapacity in heavy industry, especially steel, as part of its strategy to cope with deflationary pressures and weak domestic demand – risks that have been exacerbated by the US increasing tariffs on Chinese goods.

On the supply side, iron ore exports from the world’s two leading suppliers, Australia and Brazil, to China continued to decline, raising concerns about tightening global supplies.

Meanwhile, in the domestic steel market, Baoshan Iron & Steel Group (Baosteel) – a subsidiary of the world’s largest steel producer China Baowu Steel Group – announced a price increase of 100 yuan/ton (equivalent to 14 USD/ton) for hot-rolled coil (HRC) for orders delivered in August. This is the first adjustment after 4 months of keeping prices unchanged, except in February when HRC prices also increased by 100 yuan/ton to prepare for the peak season.

According to steel trading expert Michael Zhao, this price hike reflects cost pressure and signals of cautiously improving demand from the market.

Data from Mysteel showed that HRC output from 37 Chinese steel mills in the week from June 26 to July 2 reached 3.28 million tonnes, up 0.3% from the previous week and recording the third consecutive week of increase.

However, the global HRC market remains uncertain. In the United States, domestic producers have succeeded in raising prices thanks to former President Donald Trump’s tariff policies. In contrast, markets in China and the European Union remain weak due to low consumer demand, high inventories and fierce competition, forcing retailers to cut prices.

HRC prices in China fell 1.6% in June to $475.50/mt (FOB), despite some signs of stabilization towards the end of the month. Market sentiment remains cautious amid uncertainties about the economic recovery.
