Steel prices on the exchange

On the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE), rebar for December 2025 delivery rose slightly by 7 yuan to 3,116 yuan per tonne. Meanwhile, hot-rolled coil, rebar and stainless steel contracts also recorded slight increases of 0.43% to 1.15%, indicating a positive signal spreading across the entire steel futures market.

Iron ore futures for September delivery on the Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE) rose 1.56 percent to 718 yuan ($99.82) a tonne, the highest since April 24.

However, on the Singapore exchange, the benchmark iron ore contract for June was slightly adjusted, down 0.45% to $99.55/ton after hitting a short-term peak of $100.35/ton during the session.

The US-China deal, which slashed import tariffs for 90 days, has boosted investor confidence, sending prices of many commodities soaring, including steel and iron ore.

The optimism did not last long as the market worried that the final negotiations were not certain to be successful and consumer demand was showing signs of slowing down.

Experts at Shengda Futures predict that hot metal output may start to decline in mid-to-late May, coinciding with miners accelerating deliveries to meet quarterly targets. This is expected to put downward pressure on iron ore prices.

CICC also noted that weakness in hot metal output will be the main factor affecting prices in the short term.

While steel prices are maintaining their upward momentum, input materials such as coking coal and coke on the DCE floor have slightly decreased, 0.74% and 0.62% respectively, due to fundamental factors no longer being as positive as before.
