Steel prices edged lower on July 16, while Dalian iron ore was flat near a two-month high, as the market worried about mixed economic data from China. Domestic prices remained unchanged.
World steel prices
At the end of the trading session on July 15, the price of steel rebar for August delivery on the Shanghai Stock Exchange decreased by 0.07% (2 yuan) to 3,071 yuan/ton. On the Dalian Stock Exchange, the price of iron ore for August delivery was flat at 768 yuan/ton. Meanwhile, the price of iron ore for August delivery on the Singapore-SGX Stock Exchange decreased by 0.67 USD to 98.92 USD/ton.
Iron ore futures held steady near a two-month high as investors weighed mixed economic data from China, Reuters reported.
New home prices in China posted their biggest monthly decline in eight months in June, pointing to continued weakness in the property sector. Meanwhile, China’s economy grew 5.2% year-on-year in the second quarter, slightly faster than the 5.1% expected but slowing from the 5.4% recorded in the previous two quarters.
Industrial production unexpectedly rose sharply in June, indicating a recovery in the manufacturing sector, but retail sales growth disappointed, raising concerns about consumer demand.
Iron ore prices have rallied in recent sessions on expectations that Beijing may introduce more stimulus to support the property market, while the Chinese government is stepping up efforts to cut excess industrial capacity to counter three years of deflationary pressures.
China's steel output fell 9.2% year-on-year to 83.2 million tons in June 2025, marking the third consecutive monthly decline, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics of China cited by Bloomberg. This was a 3.9% decline from the previous month. Total steel output in the first half of 2025 was only 514.8 million tons, down 3% year-on-year, marking the lowest level since 2020.
The decline was due to a number of factors. First of all, the prolonged crisis in the real estate sector has sharply reduced steel demand in the construction industry, the largest consumer of the metal. In addition, the extremely hot weather this summer has also affected the progress of construction projects, causing demand to fall further.
In recent weeks, the Chinese government has also focused on overcapacity and price competition, factors that have contributed to deflationary pressures in the industrial sector over the past three years. Beijing has increasingly called for a clampdown on excess capacity, especially in the steel industry.
Production restrictions are also part of preparations for a military parade in Beijing in September, said Chelsea Ye, an analyst at McCloskey at Opis. In particular, in the city of Tangshan, factory operations have been temporarily reduced to improve air quality.
Analysts say that even without the official restrictions announced since the beginning of the year, China's annual steel output could remain stable due to a natural decline in demand.
