In the world market, during the week welcoming the New Year 2025, despite falling in the first and last sessions of the week, the world gold price still increased by about 0.8% throughout the week.
Trump’s tariff proposal has boosted the dollar and put significant pressure on the precious metals market, said Nitesh Shah, commodity strategist at WisdomTree Asset Management. The dollar’s biggest weekly gain since early November 2024 has made gold more expensive for buyers holding other currencies.
Trump’s proposals (on protectionism and tariffs) are expected to increase inflation, which could slow the pace of Fed rate cuts, limiting gold’s upside potential. After three rate cuts in 2024, the Fed is expected to cut only twice in 2025 as inflation persists.
However, Mr. Shah also noted that debt will continue to rise in the US and other countries. In addition, geopolitical issues will not end soon, so gold will still receive support.
Geopolitical tensions will continue to escalate in 2025, prompting central banks to continue buying gold, according to Peter Grant.
Kitco News' annual gold survey found that 266 retail investors, or 58%, of the 457 Main Street investors surveyed expect gold prices to rise to $3,000 an ounce by 2025. Another 103 investors, or 22%, see gold peaking in the $2,800-$3,000 range. Only 30 investors, or 7%, see the precious metal trading in the $2,600-$2,800 range. The remaining 58 investors, or 13%, expect prices to fall back to $2,400-$2,600 an ounce.
