A survey on August 27 on domestic airlines' websites showed that for the Ho Chi Minh City - Hanoi route, Vietnam Airlines sells one-way tickets from 1.9 - 3.7 million VND/passenger, a sharp increase compared to the average price of about 1.5 - 2 million VND/passenger on weekdays.
Bamboo Airways airfares for this route are also up to 1.9 - 3.5 million VND/passenger, Vietjet 1.8 - 2.1 million VND/passenger. For flights from Da Nang to Hanoi, prices range from 1.3 - 3.2 million VND/passenger; Hanoi - Phu Quoc up to 3.4 million VND/passenger but there are very few economy tickets left.
Because daytime airfares are quite high, many passengers accept late-night flights to get cheaper tickets of about 600,000 - 700,000 VND. Mr. Tran Quoc Hung (35 years old, IT employee, Ho Chi Minh City) said he had to "watch for tickets" for a whole week to secure a late-night flight at 11:45 p.m. on August 30 to Hanoi .
"Instead of flying during the day with a ticket price of over 3 million VND/person, our family chose to fly late at night with a price of 2.1 million VND/person, saving nearly 4 million VND for four people. Although we landed at nearly 2am, I booked a hotel near Noi Bai airport so that the whole family could rest and still be in time to attend the ceremony the next morning," Mr. Hung shared.
Some airline ticket agents in Ho Chi Minh City said that the number of customers choosing late night and early morning flights has increased significantly, accounting for nearly 1/3 of peak season ticket bookings, because there are almost no options for daytime flights under 2 million VND/trip.
Airlines increase capacity, ground staff work overtime
Speaking to us, a representative of Vietnam Airlines said that the airline has increased nearly 600,000 seats during the six peak days from August 29 to September 3, equivalent to 2,900 flights, 100,000 more seats than the same period last year. Of which, domestic flights accounted for more than 418,000 seats.
Bamboo Airways also arranged additional night flights to "share the load" during rush hour, while Vietjet opened additional express check-in counters for group passengers to avoid congestion.
Ground service staff at Tan Son Nhat airport have also increased their shifts by 30%, adding more staff to check-in and screening.
"This is the busiest time after Tet. On August 30, the number of visitors is expected to double that of normal days, so all departments must be present 3-4 hours early to coordinate," a ground shift leader shared.
