On August 28, Dong Nai General Hospital coordinated with Cho Ray Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City and Dong Nai Red Cross to open a permanent voluntary blood donation point.
This is the first permanent voluntary blood donation site in our country and is a pilot model for the program to build a permanent blood receiving network chaired by the Blood Transfusion Center - Cho Ray Hospital.
In the initial phase, the fixed blood donation point will receive blood on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday mornings every week. After that, based on the actual situation, the hospital can deploy it on all days of the week.
According to initial estimates, this fixed blood donation point will receive 50 units of blood per session, equivalent to about 600 - 650 units/month and about 10,000 units of blood per year. Thereby, meeting 60 - 70% of the hospital's blood transfusion needs.
After receiving, blood products will be transferred to Cho Ray Hospital for processing, then transferred to medical units to treat patients.
On the first day of implementation, the fixed blood donation point of Dong Nai General Hospital received nearly 30 units of blood.
Mr. Ngo Duc Tuan - Director of Dong Nai General Hospital - said that each year the hospital uses more than 17,000 units of blood (about 66% of the total blood demand of Dong Nai province), mainly for emergency cases, surgery and treatment of hematological diseases.
However, since July 2025, the local anemia has directly affected the treatment. Therefore, the establishment of a permanent voluntary blood donation point is necessary and urgent in the current situation.
"When implementing this blood donation point, the hospital can take the initiative in terms of human resources, facilities, and materials, and blood donors can take the initiative in terms of time. This is a turning point in mobilizing blood from the people to serve treatment work," Dr. Tuan shared.
In addition, the deployment of fixed blood donation points also helps reduce the load on mobile reception points, while creating conditions for propaganda and mobilizing people to donate blood regularly, scientifically and according to standards.
This is also a model of coordination in the policy of developing a fixed blood receiving network of the Ministry of Health and the orientation to replicate the model of the Blood Transfusion Center - Cho Ray Hospital in the Southeast provinces.
Meanwhile, Mr. Pham Le Nhat Minh, Deputy Director of the Blood Transfusion Center - Cho Ray Hospital, shared that receiving voluntary blood on a regular basis is a world trend.
Currently, countries are focusing on increasing fixed blood donation points and gradually reducing mobile blood donation points because of many advantages such as: creating favorable conditions for voluntary blood donors to access more easily, conveniently, regularly and safely. This helps increase blood reserves, meet the needs of blood transfusion and treatment.
According to Mr. Minh, the fixed voluntary blood donation point at Dong Nai General Hospital is a model, and the center will replicate this model from 2026 onwards. During the operation, the unit will re-evaluate to create a standard model to apply to other units.
