After graduating from Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy in 2004, Dr. Nguyen Dinh Quang, currently Head of the Department of Neurology, worked at Dong Nai General Hospital. With his dedication and constant efforts, in 2024, Dr. Quang and the hospital's Neurology Department were honored to be one of three stroke units nationwide to receive the Diamond Award from the World Stroke Organization.
The Department of Neurology currently has 51 beds with 32 staff. As the leading stroke treatment unit in the province, the department receives and treats thousands of patients each year. Specifically, in 2019, the department received and treated nearly 1,000 stroke patients; from 2023 to now, the number of patients treated for stroke has increased to 1,200 patients/year, requiring the department to constantly develop in terms of the number of beds, as well as treatment and care expertise. As head of the department, over the years, Dr. Quang and the team of doctors and nurses have overcome difficulties and challenges to excellently complete their tasks. Since then, the quality of care and treatment for patients has become more specialized and improved.
Dr. Huynh Tan Phuc, Deputy Head of the Department of Neurology - who has accompanied Dr. Quang for 10 years in developing the stroke unit, shared: "The Department of Neurology and the stroke unit have achieved great achievements thanks to the enthusiasm and expertise of Dr. Quang. From the early days of establishing the stroke unit, Dr. Quang has been very enthusiastic in treatment activities. With the successful implementation of the first thrombolysis cases, Dr. Quang has created conditions for some of his colleagues to study intervention to join hands in developing the stroke unit and the Department of Neurology. Up to now, the department is operating very well."

Mr. Bui Ngoc Voc (Tam Hiep ward) is a patient who has just made a spectacular recovery after undergoing endovascular intervention after a stroke. His family brought him to the emergency room in a state of hemiplegia, unable to speak, and impaired consciousness. This is a case of stroke of unknown timing. After examining and evaluating the patient's condition through paraclinical tests, the doctors determined that the patient had a large blood vessel in the brain blocked and prescribed intervention to remove the clot using a device. After the intervention, the blood vessel was completely reopened. The patient recovered very well and had almost no sequelae.
Mr. Voc recounted: "When I slept until almost morning, I felt like I couldn't speak clearly, my limbs were numb, and I couldn't clench my fists. When I got to the hospital, the doctors sent me for an MRI scan and then intervention. After 1 day, I felt much better, about 70-80%. I was able to eat and walk. The doctors here are very good at their profession and take very good care of me."
Bringing stroke treatment closer to patients
To improve the effectiveness of stroke treatment, in recent times, Dr. Quang has directly guided, transferred techniques, and updated professional knowledge to lower-level hospitals; organized a network of stroke patient treatment between hospitals in the province. Thereby contributing to shortening treatment time and improving the recovery ability of patients.
“Sharing my experience and knowledge will help other units deploy stroke treatment more easily. The more stroke units the province deploys, the more opportunities patients have to receive early treatment. In stroke treatment, early treatment is an extremely important factor that helps patients have a high chance of returning to life and daily activities,” said Dr. Quang.

Implementing this model well will not only help many patients but also reduce overload for end-line hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City.
