Apple officially says goodbye to self-driving cars.
Reports indicate that Apple officially requested the cancellation of its self-driving vehicle testing permit in California on September 25, 2024. Just two days later, the California Department of Transportation (DMV) revoked the permit. Granted in 2017, the permit allowed Apple to test self-driving technology with a safety-supervised driver until 2025. However, the company decided to voluntarily terminate the project, marking the end of a challenging journey spanning over a decade.

Throughout the testing period, Apple used Lexus SUVs equipped with sensors and cameras to develop self-driving technology on California roads. Despite high expectations from both the industry and consumers, development progress fell short, and signs of the project's difficulties became increasingly apparent.
The cancellation of the testing license not only marks the end of a crucial phase for Apple but also shows the company is shifting its focus to other projects. Although Apple has never publicly disclosed information about its self-driving car, expectations for the product, tentatively named Apple Car, remain high thanks to the company's reputation for revolutionizing the industry with innovative products like the iPhone and Apple Watch.

However, halting the self-driving car project doesn't mean Apple has completely abandoned its ambitions in the automotive sector. In recent years, the company has shifted its efforts towards improving CarPlay to enable seamless integration between iPhones and in-car infotainment systems.

The latest version of CarPlay offers complete control over car functions, suggesting Apple may be pursuing a less ambitious but still impactful approach to the automotive industry.
Although the company hasn't made an official announcement about its efforts in the automotive sector, it's clear that Apple will continue to seek ways to integrate into users' lives through software like CarPlay and improvements to other technologies.
With the cancellation of the self-driving car testing permit, the dream of the Apple Car seems to have ended. This is considered one of the biggest failures of the iPhone manufacturer.
