Entering its 19th season, the National Press Award is still the most precious recognition for journalists, the most prestigious and honorable award in the current press award system in our country.

The 19th National Press Awards Ceremony - 2024 will be held on the 100th anniversary of Vietnam Revolutionary Press Day (June 21, 2025), promising to bring emotion and pride to the award-winning authors in particular and journalists in general.

Before the award ceremony, VietnamPlus E-newspaper reporter talked with Mr. Nguyen Duc Loi, Permanent Vice President of the Vietnam Journalists Association , Permanent Vice President of the National Press Awards Council, about the special features of this year's award season.

Add two award categories

- It is known that the 19th National Press Awards received the largest number of entries ever. How do you evaluate the quality of the entries?

Journalist Nguyen Duc Loi: The preliminary selection process at all levels of the Association selected 1,970 entries, of which 1,913 met the requirements.

This year's works have shown their adherence to major topics from politics , economics, culture, society, security, defense and aspects of life in 2024. The press has promptly and vividly reflected important events and issues of the country with prominent topics.

In the economic field, the works focus on efforts to implement the 2024 socio-economic development plan, major issues such as digital transformation, green transformation, and green economic development.

In terms of politics and society, the press has widely reflected the work of streamlining the apparatus, reforming institutions, and rearranging administrative units; the work of building and rectifying the Party; inspecting, supervising, and controlling power associated with the fight against corruption, waste, and negativity; fighting against erroneous and hostile viewpoints; and promoting the spirit of great national unity.

In addition, many hot social issues were also mentioned frankly such as the damage caused by Typhoon Yagi, deforestation, overexploitation of mineral resources, water pollution; the destruction of smuggled and counterfeit goods; the problem of driving tests; the Thich Minh Tue phenomenon; human trafficking and the darkness in charity shelters. The examples of good people doing good deeds, portraits of young female doctors, blind students, female teachers in mountainous areas, Party cell secretaries in remote villages... with noble, convincing and touching acts were also portrayed quite clearly.

- What are the outstanding new features of this year's National Press Awards, sir?

Journalist Nguyen Duc Loi: This is the first year that the National Press Awards have included two new categories, Multimedia Journalism and Creative Journalism, in line with the reality of journalistic life. The number of entries is not large, but it still meets the expectations of the Awards Council.

Multimedia and creative journalism products are invested in by press agencies, applying modern journalism technology, developing multi-platform and multimedia journalism while still maintaining standards in content, ensuring political, ideological, accurate, and timely values, having a positive and strong social impact, increasing attractiveness and increasing public access. The works selected by the Final Jury are worthy of being awarded the 19th National Press Awards.

Arouse pride in journalism

- Entering the 19th year, at a time when press agencies nationwide are focusing on organization and reorganization according to the policy of streamlining the Party and State apparatus. How do you evaluate the participation of the Association at all levels and local press agencies in the National Press Awards?

Journalist Nguyen Duc Loi: I affirm that the value of the National Press Award is still widely spread throughout all levels of the Association and its members, with the participation of 17/21 Inter-Association Branches, 29 affiliated Branches, and 59/63 Provincial and Municipal Journalists Associations.

Many press agencies have innovated, approached modern journalism technology, developed multi-platform, multimedia journalism and creative forms of journalism to increase public appeal and accelerate digital transformation.

The organization of this year's awards at all levels of the Association has been carried out in an orderly and effective manner. However, because this is the first year of implementation according to the National Press Awards Charter (amended and supplemented) in 2024 with a number of new regulations and award groups; at the same time, units have to implement Resolution 18-NQ/TW, which has more or less affected the progress of selecting works, so the submission of works to the Awards is later than in previous years; some units have not followed the instructions correctly.

This year, the National Press Awards continues to implement online judging via the Vietnam Journalists Association's tracking software for electronic, radio, television, and modern press works; in addition to directly judging printed and photojournalistic works.

On June 3, the 33-member Final Jury evaluated and scored 183 works that passed the preliminary round, selecting 128 outstanding press works to award prizes, including: 13 A Prizes, 27 B Prizes, 49 C Prizes and 39 Encouragement Prizes.

Up to now, all preparations for the award ceremony have been carried out in accordance with the Award Regulations and on schedule.

- The National Press Awards Ceremony, the National Press Association and the National Press Forum taking place from June 19-21 can be likened to different sounds in a chorus celebrating 100 years of Vietnam Revolutionary Press. How do you feel about directly participating in the ideation and staging of this series of events?

Journalist Nguyen Duc Loi: The 100th anniversary of Vietnam Revolutionary Press Day is a particularly important milestone for journalists. Since the beginning of 2025, the Vietnam Journalists Association has closely coordinated with relevant units to implement activities assigned by the Steering Committee. Not only at the central level but also at the local level, the associations, branches, and press agencies have organized many events in response.

Activities to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Vietnam Revolutionary Press Day were not only focused on June 21 but were held throughout the year, including some particularly new activities. For example, a delegation of 100 journalists from press agencies went to Truong Sa, or a press delegation went to Guangzhou to visit the place where Uncle Ho founded Thanh Nien newspaper, marking the birth of Vietnamese journalism.

Over the past year, the Vietnam Journalists Association and press agencies have also conducted many “return to the source” journeys that are highly educational, encouraging and inspiring for young journalists.

Many seminars and talks on working methods, political-ideological education, and professional ethics for journalists; central and local journalism awards have been organized very thoughtfully and successfully.

All are aimed at celebrating the 100th anniversary of Vietnam Revolutionary Press Day, arousing the pride of journalists, affirming the position and great contributions of generations of Vietnamese journalists in the cause of building and defending the Fatherland.

- Thank you very much./.
