Three scientists have discovered the “gatekeepers” of the immune system—regulatory T cells—and laid the foundation for a new field of research.

These findings also pave the way for the development of potential medical therapies currently in clinical trials, with the hope of treating or curing autoimmune diseases, improving the effectiveness of cancer treatments, and preventing serious complications after stem cell transplants.

The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded 115 times since 1901. In 2024, this prestigious award belonged to two American scientists, Victor Ambros (born 1953) and Gary Ruvkun (born 1952), for their discovery of microRNA (microRNA), thereby discovering the basic principles governing how genes are regulated.

The Medicine Prize kicks off the 2025 Nobel week. The next prizes to be announced include the Nobel Prize in Physics (October 7), the Nobel Prize in Chemistry (October 8) and the Nobel Prize in Literature (October 9).

The Nobel Peace Prize is the only award announced in Oslo (Norway) on October 10.

Meanwhile, the Nobel Prize in Economics will close the 2025 Nobel Week on October 13./.
