According to a VNA reporter in Indonesia, a meteorite fell into the Java Sea on the evening of October 5, creating a bright streak of light and a loud explosion that frightened people in many areas of Cirebon city, West Java province.
Many residents in the East Cirebon area, especially around Lemahabang, said they saw a giant fireball streak across the sky, leaving a bright red-orange streak before disappearing into the distance, followed a few seconds later by a loud explosion.
Security cameras in the area also recorded a glowing object moving at high speed at the time, which coincided with the vibration data recorded by the ACJM seismic sensor of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) in Cirebon at 6:39 p.m. on October 5.
According to BMKG, the meteorite moved across the sky over Kuningan and Cirebon in a southwest direction between 6:35 p.m. and 6:39 p.m. before crashing into the Java Sea.
When entering the lower atmosphere, meteorites create strong shock waves causing loud explosions and strong vibrations.
Astronomer Thomas Djamaluddin of the Indonesian National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) confirmed that the meteorite was quite large and passed through the atmosphere. However, the light and explosion heard by the people were completely harmless.
Experts say that when a large meteorite enters the Earth's atmosphere at a speed of tens of kilometers per second, the extremely strong friction with the air will cause it to burn, creating a fireball and shock waves spreading through space.
In the coming time, BRIN will continue to analyze data from observation stations and satellites to determine the exact size, trajectory and location of the meteorite. There is currently no sign of meteorite fragments falling on residential areas./.
