Yesterday (October 13), Sacombank won the Southern region championship after defeating Sawaco in the final match with a score of 3-0 at Ton Duc Thang University Stadium. The two teams gave fans a match of extremely high technical nature.
Sitting in the office but still playing soccer well
Due to the nature of banking work, Sacombank players have to sit continuously for 8-10 hours every day. Sacombank's hero in the final match - Dang Van Cam (scoring a double) - is a typical example of such office workers.
Currently, he has been working as a corporate customer specialist at Sacombank since 2019. His passion for football is the biggest motivation that motivates Mr. Cam to put on his shoes and go to the field every night: "My love for football always makes me eager to go to the field. Even though there are many days when I have to work overtime until 7-8pm, if there is a match, I just play." Discipline in training and physical training is the secret that helps Mr. Cam maintain good physical condition at the age of 32.
Meanwhile, Sacombank driver and coach Nguyen Tuan Em continued to have a "lucky" tournament when he brought the team to the Southern region championship. Last year, he brought Sacombank to the national final. "The solidarity of the team is the key to today's championship. We always try our best in every match and consider every match as the final. The qualifying round championship is the biggest boost for the whole team to reach the national final," coach Tuan Em shared.

The love of football of the "plumbers"
For the past two years, Sawaco (Saigon Water Supply Corporation) has been a strong and formidable candidate for the tournament. This year, Sawaco's team includes many construction and renovation workers. The hard work helps them build their endurance, becoming the foundation for the team to overcome dozens of strong opponents in the Southern region's qualifying round.
Every night, when most of the city's residents have fallen asleep, somewhere underground still resounds the sound of drilling machines and hammers of Sawaco workers. That is the daily work of the construction and repair team - the people responsible for handling broken pipes, leaks, and replacing water pipes for the city.
"In big cities, the water supply, electricity, and fiber optic cable systems overlap each other. Whenever an incident occurs, we have to dig 3-5 meters deep to fix it, sometimes taking 1-2 days to complete. To avoid traffic congestion, many parts of the work have to be done in the middle of the night" - Mr. Duong Van Tuan (37 years old), captain of the Sawaco Trade Union football team, shared.
In the Sawaco team participating in this year's tournament, there are 4 players who are construction and renovation workers. The heavy work helps them gain endurance, jokingly calling it "free physical exercise", and team spirit is forged through each shift working together.
As a long-time worker of Sawaco, when he was young, Nguyen Van Cap had a dream of pursuing a football career and was in the Quang Tri youth team. "To make a living, I went to the South to work and have worked for Sawaco for 15 years in the construction and repair team - Mr. Cap shared - Every day, there are 5-6 calls from people reporting water pipe breaks and water pipe repairs. We directly dig up the road and fill it after the repair is done. Many large water pipe breaks take a whole day to complete."

The sweat of joy on the field
After 12 years in the profession, he was covered in dirt and sand, working all night in cold water and mud, but he still made time for his passion for football - something that made him "sweat, but it was sweat of joy". "Working is also very hard. But when I get to put on my shoes and go out on the field, even though I sweat just as much, I am happy because it is what I am passionate about", Mr. Cap confided.
One of the close teammates of Mr. Tuan and Mr. Cap is Mr. Nguyen Tuan Viet (38 years old) - who has been with the construction and renovation team for 16 years. Few people know that, before becoming a plumber, he had a dream of becoming a professional football player. "Before joining Sawaco, I used to pursue a football career but had to stop due to injury. Now that I am older, I still want to inspire the younger generation - just like me in the past, passionate about football to the point of forgetting fatigue," he confided.
Attending the final match, journalist Nguyen Hoang Nguyen - Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Tuoi Tre newspaper - said: "This was an exciting, tense match with true sportsmanship . More than 40 matches and more than 230 goals were truly eye-catching, bringing the spectators and players moments of relaxation, forgetting fatigue and stress."
