The dog, later named Connie, was trapped in a shipping container and had been inside for at least eight days before being discovered on January 31.
Reportedly, the U.S. Coast Guard inspection team randomly selected thousands of containers at the port in Houston for inspection. They heard barking and scratching sounds coming from containers stacked nearly 8 meters high.
The inspection team had to use a crane to lower the container. When the door opened, a dog ran out. "It was exhausted, hungry, and thirsty, but very happy to see the people who had rescued it," according to a Facebook post by the coast guard.
Images posted on Facebook show Connie wagging its tail, sniffing around, and drinking water after its escape. Coast Guard officials said Connie had been stranded for at least eight days without water or food, so it was emaciated and dirty when rescued.
Authorities have not yet determined the origin of the container, but it is full of old cars, most likely being transported overseas for parts. It's highly probable that Connie was in a car at a junkyard when she was accidentally placed inside the container and became trapped. Without rescue, Connie could have remained in the container for another week before the cargo ship arrived, and would have gone without food for two weeks.
According to media reports, Connie was taken to the Pasadena Animal Shelter for care before being transferred to the Forever Changed Animal Rescue (FCAR) organization. They plan to find "a wonderful home she deserves." FCAR's Facebook post received many comments from people interested in adopting Connie.
