The 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry honors three scientists who developed metal-organic frameworks.

On the afternoon of October 8 (Hanoi time), the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences decided to award the 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry to three scientists: Susumu Kitagawa (Japan), Richard Robson (Australia) and Omar M. Yaghi (USA) "for their contributions to the development of metal-organic frameworks".

According to a press release from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm, the three scientists have developed a completely new type of molecular structure. In this structure, metal ions act as the most important part, linked together by long organic molecules (carbon-based). The combination of metal ions and organic molecules creates crystals with large cavities. Such porous materials are called metal-organic frameworks (MOFs).

“Metal-organic frameworks hold enormous potential, opening up unprecedented opportunities to create tailor-made materials with completely new functions,” said Heiner Linke, Chairman of the Nobel Committee for Chemistry.

The 2025 Nobel Week will continue with the awards for Literature (October 9), Peace (October 10) and Economics (October 13). Each award includes a Gold Medal, a diploma and 11 million Swedish kronor.

The Nobel Prize award ceremony will take place on December 10, the anniversary of the death of the prize's founder, scientist Alfred Nobel.
