On the afternoon of October 7, the 2025 Nobel Prize in Physics went to three American scientists , John Clarke, Michel H. Devoret, and John M. Martinis, "for their discovery of the macroscopic quantum mechanical tunneling effect and energy quantization in electrical circuits.

This is also the second prize announced in this year's Nobel Prize season.

According to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, the three scientists conducted experiments with an electrical circuit, in which they demonstrated both the quantum mechanical tunneling effect and quantum energy levels in a system large enough to hold in the hand.

This year's Nobel Prize in Physics offers an opportunity to develop the next generation of quantum technologies, including quantum cryptography, quantum computers and quantum sensors.

Last year, the Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to two scientists, John Joseph Hopfield - American and Geoffrey Everest Hinton - British-Canadian, for discoveries that “helped develop machine learning with artificial neural networks,” paving the way for the explosion of AI technology.

However, these scientists also warn that if not tightly controlled, AI could lead to catastrophic consequences.

The 2025 Nobel Prize in Physics will be awarded on December 10. All three scientists will share the prize, worth nearly $1.2 million.

To date, 118 Nobel Prizes in Physics have been awarded since 1901./.
