Releasing heritage 'separatism', expanding experiences of visiting Ha Long and Lan Ha bays

According to information from the Ha Long Bay Management Board, on April 26, the People's Committee of Quang Ninh province agreed in principle to allow Hai Phong's tourist ships to take visitors to Ha Long Bay at many routes, starting from May 1. Conversely, Ha Long's tourist ships will also be allowed to take visitors to Lan Ha Bay (Cat Hai District, Hai Phong).

Specifically, Hai Phong 's cruise ships will be allowed to operate on Ha Long Bay tours including: VHL3, VHL4, VHL5 and VHL6.

These ships must fully comply with the regulations of Quang Ninh province, register for operation and sign a contract with the Ha Long Bay Management Board. Pick-up and drop-off of passengers will take place at designated ports such as Tuan Chau International Passenger Port and Ha Long International Passenger Port.

Tourists will buy tickets according to the current fee. For example, the VHL6 route costs 150,000 VND/person/trip, the VHL3 and VHL4 routes are 200,000 VND/person/trip, and the VHL5 route is 250,000 VND/person/trip.

In addition, two new itineraries, VHL7 (combining major sightseeing routes) will cost VND600,000/person/trip and VHL8 (short trips between major ports) will cost VND70,000/person/trip.

Driving force for regional tourism linkage

Allowing tourist boats from the two localities to travel between Ha Long Bay and Lan Ha Bay is considered an important step forward, resolving long-standing problems in the management of waterway tourism in this area.

Previously, due to restrictive regulations, each locality's cruise ships were only allowed to operate within the locality under their management, leading to a situation of "separatism" over heritage, reducing connectivity and the effectiveness of exploiting tourism potential.

Many boat owners have expressed frustration at the limited itinerary, while tourists also face difficulties if they want to fully explore both famous bays. Even the situation of boats operating "illegally" to meet the needs of tourists leads to a loss of revenue from sightseeing fees.

The connection between Ha Long Bay and Lan Ha Bay not only legalizes tourism activities and increases transparency in fee collection, but also opens up new space for tourism development, contributing to extending the length of stay and increasing spending of tourists.

In particular, visitors will have the opportunity to fully experience the majestic beauty and ecological diversity of the two bays, from the world wonder of Ha Long with its majestic limestone mountains, to the wild, peaceful beauty of Lan Ha with its poetic beaches and ancient fishing villages.

According to experts, expanding the tour itinerary between Hai Phong and Quang Ninh will also promote regional tourism links, creating conditions for travel businesses to build new, more attractive tour products, and exploit the potential of the entire Northeast region.

This is a necessary step in the context of Vietnam's tourism industry moving towards a green, sustainable growth model and increasing real experiences for tourists.

The connection between Ha Long Bay and Lan Ha Bay promises not only to bring great economic benefits to both localities, but also to contribute to enhancing Vietnam's tourism position on the world map.
