It was a piece of colored paper with a traditional border and the homeroom teacher's name written at the bottom. But what made it special was not the form, but the heart of the person who made it. The "letter of commendation" was dedicated to a 9-year-old student in Hoai Thuong commune, Thuan Thanh town, Bac Ninh province, with the content: "Praise student D.NA (name withheld), class 3A for her great efforts in studying. Love and pride in her, hope she continues to try hard!"
D.NA was diagnosed with a brain tumor two years ago and underwent surgery on the first day of school. The tumor makes studying very difficult and tiring. She often has headaches and her eyes become blurry every day; she is even mentally unstable, agitated, difficult to control, and easily quarrels with friends. The teacher always gives her special attention, from the seating position in class to designing lessons that are easiest for her to see; accompanying her parents to help her catch up and study happily and naturally like other students. Every day she goes to school, every time she holds a pen, every effort to absorb knowledge is a great victory.

A school year has come to an end. On the final day, she could not go to school to say goodbye to her teachers and friends before the summer break, because of an accident that required 5 stitches in her leg. Her friends were excited about the awards and certificates; but "She was sad, saying that this year she did not have a certificate to frame and hang on the wall with her sister", said D.NA's mother. Looking at her daughter, D.NA's mother felt like her heart was broken, silently swallowing her tears and only wishing "As long as you are healthy, that will be a certificate for me". Accompanying her like a mother at school, at the end of the school year, the homeroom teacher lovingly sent D.NA that "Letter of Commendation" as a sincere encouragement, a warm comfort. It was also a special, meaningful "certificate of commendation", a spiritual motivation for the poor student D.NA.
The “letter of commendation” made me ponder. Life does not always reward all efforts with titles. The true value of learning andeducation is not only imparting knowledge, measured by scores, but more meaningfully and deeply, it is giving love, teaching how to live, how to be a human being.
