Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên26/10/2023

Since the first work Artificial Breeding Carp directed by People's Artist Luong Duc in 1965, up to now, science films have reached nearly 60 years old. During that time, the film genre has brought value not only to cinema but also to other fields such as: medicine, culture, environment,...

Important contributions to cinema

The films Rice blast disease ; Attention! Pesticides (director, People's Artist Luong Duc); Field planning (director Tran Tinh) all help farmers gain more experience in farming and rice cultivation. Or Life in Cuc Phuong forest (director Nguyen Van Huong), Vietnam butterfly fauna (director Nguyen Hong Quang),... have brought magnificent footage of nature as well as expanded knowledge about biodiversity conservation for the audience.

Notably, the contribution in preserving and transmitting medical knowledge is the most important achievement of the science film genre. Works such as: The Journey of Genes (director, People's Artist Nguyen Nhu Vu), Organ Transplant: Turning the Impossible into Possible (director Nguyen Hong Viet),... not only help viewers gain more medical knowledge but also help them understand the tireless efforts of doctors on the journey to find ways to cure patients.

To avoid making a science film boring, the director must be very astute in the process of turning dry knowledge into a familiar but equally engaging story. People's Artist Luong Duc realized this early on when he started making science films. Therefore, he skillfully applied the storytelling techniques of other film genres such as animation, documentaries, etc., combined with letting the characters act out lively, everyday skits in his films. Thanks to that, Vietnamese cinema has films that are "scientific but full of poetry".

Because of these values, the Vietnam Film Festival as well as the Golden Kite Awards have a category dedicated to scientific films. This is a way to respect and honor the contributions of cinema and science lovers who have been dedicating themselves to bringing this film genre into contemporary artistic life.

Challenges that science fiction films need to overcome

Science films have had works that have gone down in the history of Vietnamese cinema, but, currently, this genre of film is facing great challenges if it does not want the majority of the public to forget, or worse, not know about the existence of science films.

First of all, how to reach a large audience is a difficult problem for this genre of film when the audience prefers comedy, action, ... and sometimes "instant noodle movies" over other genres. At the same time, science films are often shown on television and are not widely promoted, more or less overshadowing the presence of this genre of film.

In addition to external challenges, science films also have to face many internal challenges such as searching for and innovating scripts, topics, etc. to suit the times. However, above all, "where to find the next generation to continue the value of science films?" is the difficult problem.

According to People's Artist Luong Duc, the "father" of the science film genre, director of many documentaries and science films, said: "In reality, in Vietnam, scientists are not properly evaluated for their contributions and the intelligence they put in. This is not only in cinema but also in other fields. Therefore, they do not receive material encouragement. That is the second reason. best. Second, science films are easy to make but very difficult because science has fixed formulas, it is very difficult to find new things in science. Meanwhile, young people like things that are attractive and new.

"And importantly, making scientific films not only requires people to have artistic qualities and emotions, but also the qualities of a scientist," Mr. Luong Duc shared.

Director Nguyen Hoang Lam, Deputy Director of the Center for Documentary and Reportage Films, Vietnam Television , said that science films need to come from the stories and needs of ordinary people. It is not necessary that science films have to be something formidable.

"If we want the young generation to make more science films, then science films must have value to life, and will surely attract viewers. Once there are viewers, it will stimulate demand, and where there is demand, there will be supply," director Nguyen Hoang Lam shared.
