On June 24, Hue Central Hospital announced that it had successfully performed a hip and femur replacement surgery using a megaprosthesis (large artificial hip/knee joint) to preserve the limb of a 71-year-old patient, residing in An Cuu Ward (Hue City). This patient had an artificial hip replacement 17 years ago and had another surgery due to loose joints 1 year ago.
The complex surgery was performed by a team of doctors from the Department of Joint Surgery - Sports Medicine at the Center for Orthopedic Trauma - Plastic Surgery (Hue Central Hospital).

Megaprosthesis hip and femur replacement surgery is a specialized technique to preserve limbs for patients in the field of orthopedic trauma surgery.
Megaprosthesis is a large artificial knee/joint, often used in complex surgeries, especially when replacing part or all of large joints and bones such as the hip, knee and femur.
Patient PTX has a history of artificial hip replacement. More than 4 months ago, Ms. X. had pain when walking and had to use a cane...
Through examination and imaging, doctors recorded widespread bone loss, fracture around the artificial hip joint, fracture of the bone fusion device, axis deviation and shortening of the upper limb by 7 cm - a severe and complicated injury, with the risk of loss of limb function if not intervened promptly.

After being admitted to the Department of Joint Surgery - Sports Medicine, Ms. X. was scheduled for surgery to replace her hip and more than half of her femur with megaprosthesis.
The surgery lasted nearly 4 hours and was performed by Dr. Nguyen Nguyen Thai Bao, Head of the Department of Joint Surgery - Sports Medicine, and his team with maximum support in terms of human resources and modern equipment from the hospital. The doctors restored the structure and function of the limb, restoring the length of both legs to the same length. After the surgery, the patient recovered well, was able to stand on his own and began the rehabilitation process.
New hope for patients with bone cancer and complex bone lesions
According to Professor - Doctor Pham Nhu Hiep, Director of Hue Central Hospital, mega prosthesis is a complex technique, requiring high level of expertise and maximum coordination between specialties: joint surgery, anesthesia, resuscitation, diagnostic imaging, rehabilitation to ensure accuracy and thoroughness in cutting, grafting and assembling artificial implants.
"The megaprosthesis technique is considered the optimal solution for severe injuries that previously had a high risk of amputation," said Professor - Doctor Pham Nhu Hiep.
Also according to Professor - Doctor Pham Nhu Hiep, in Vietnam, basically only limb preservation is performed for bone cancer patients using biological methods (bone grafting, bone lengthening according to the Ilizarov principle... But with the megaprosthesis technique, the biggest advantage is that patients can walk and move immediately after surgery (instead of having to spend more than 1 year wearing a frame and crutches compared to the old method).
Currently, in Vietnam, there are several large hospitals in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City that have implemented this technique. Hue Central Hospital is the first hospital in the Central Highlands region to effectively implement the megaprosthesis technique.
