Ms. Phan Thi Hai, Deputy Director of the Tobacco Harm Prevention Fund (Ministry of Health ) said that cigarette smoke threatens health, quality of life and the environment.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), each year, tobacco kills more than 8 million people worldwide, of which about 1.3 million are victims of passive smoking - people who do not smoke, but still have to inhale smoke from others.
"In Vietnam, there are up to 103,000 deaths each year (an average of nearly 290 deaths per day) due to tobacco-related diseases. Behind each of these numbers is a family that has suffered a loss, the tears of loved ones, and pain that is difficult to compensate for.
Not only does smoking take away health and life, it also leaves a heavy economic burden on the country from treatment costs, loss of labor productivity, to damage caused by fire and explosion, and environmental pollution," Ms. Hai emphasized.
This expert said that the Health Economics Association estimates that in 2022, Vietnam will lose up to 108 trillion VND each year in economic losses due to treatment, care, and lost productivity due to death and diseases caused by tobacco.

According to Ms. Hai, each "No Smoking" sign is not only an administrative regulation, but also a message about respect and civilization, protecting the health of tourists (Photo: LH).
In the tourism and service industry, cigarette smoke also reduces the value of space, service quality and professional image of the business, destroying the good impression in the eyes of tourists.
According to Ms. Hai, each “No Smoking” sign is not only an administrative regulation, but also a message about respect and civilization, protecting the health of tourists, especially in Da Nang - one of the major tourist cities - which welcomes about 8-9 million visitors each year, including over 2 million international visitors.
The Deputy Director of the Tobacco Harm Prevention Fund hopes that the city government and relevant agencies will continue to strengthen inspection and supervision, promptly commend units that perform well and strictly handle violations.
At the same time, it is necessary to promote communication and education work, integrating tobacco harm prevention content into local health, cultural, educational and tourism programs.
For hotel, restaurant and tourist attraction owners, proactively establishing "No Smoking" rules, placing clear signs and training staff to behave tactfully and civilly with customers is extremely important.
At the event, Mr. Truong Quang Binh, Deputy Director of the Department of Health of Da Nang City affirmed that Da Nang always identifies protecting, caring for and improving people's health as a key task. Preventing and combating the harmful effects of tobacco is considered one of the important contents of preventive medicine work, part of the strategy to build a "Healthy City - Livable City".
Mr. Binh said that the Department of Health of Da Nang city will continue to advise the City People's Committee on solutions to strengthen state management and perfect the inter-sectoral coordination mechanism in preventing and combating the harmful effects of tobacco.
Continue to direct medical units to promote propaganda, inspection and supervision of smoke-free environment implementation in hospitals, medical facilities, schools and communities; coordinate with sectors, businesses and media agencies to replicate the models of "Smoke-free units" and "Green, clean and friendly hotels and restaurants".
