Vietnam's first female Deputy Prime Minister attracts international media

(VTC News) - The fact that Ms. Pham Thi Thanh Tra has become the first female Deputy Prime Minister of Vietnam is attracting the attention of international media.

On October 25, at the 10th Session, the National Assembly passed a Resolution approving the Prime Minister's proposal to appoint Ms. Pham Thi Thanh Tra - former Minister of Home Affairs - as Deputy Prime Minister for the 2021-2026 term. This is the first time in the history of the Government that there is a female Deputy Prime Minister.

On this special occasion, Reuters news agency (UK) reported that the Vietnamese National Assembly confirmed the appointment of two new Deputy Prime Ministers and three new Ministers.

"The additional Deputy Prime Ministers include former Minister of Home Affairs Pham Thi Thanh Tra and former Secretary of Gia Lai Provincial Party Committee Ho Quoc Dung. This appointment brings the number of Deputy Prime Ministers in the Government apparatus to nine people," Reuters reported.

In addition, Reuters also reported that the Vietnamese National Assembly approved the appointment of Ministers of 3 Ministries: Foreign Affairs, Home Affairs, Agriculture and Environment.

Also according to Reuters, the Vietnamese National Assembly began its final session of the 15th term on Monday (October 20) and will last until December 11.

Along with that, Russia's TASS news agency reported: "The Vietnamese National Assembly approved the appointment of Ms. Pham Thi Thanh Tra, former Minister of Home Affairs, to the position of Deputy Prime Minister. The approval vote took place during the 10th session, which is also the last session of the 15th National Assembly term, taking place in Hanoi."

Similarly, China's Sina newspaper emphasized: "Public information shows that Ms. Pham Thi Thanh Tra was born in January 1964 and was admitted to the Communist Party of Vietnam in June 1993. She is a member of the Central Executive Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, terms XII and XIII."

The news site caliber.az also emphasized the work process of Ms. Pham Thi Thanh Tra: "Ms. Pham Thi Thanh Tra, 61 years old, became the first woman to hold the position of Deputy Prime Minister in Vietnam.

She started her career as a teacher and then held leadership positions in Yen Bai, including Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee and Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee. She was approved as Minister of Home Affairs in April 2021 and held this position until her new appointment."

Azerbaijan's report.az website also confirmed the appointment of Minister of Home Affairs Pham Thi Thanh Tra and Gia Lai Provincial Party Secretary Ho Quoc Dung as Deputy Prime Ministers for the 2021-2026 term.

"The resolution was passed in a closed session on October 25 according to a report by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh. Of the 430 National Assembly deputies participating in the vote (accounting for 90.72% of the total number of deputies), 429 deputies approved; one deputy did not vote ," reported.az.

New Deputy Prime Minister Pham Thi Thanh Tra was born in 1964, her hometown is Nghe An province. She has a Master's degree in Educational Management, a Bachelor's degree in Literature and Advanced Political Theory.

Ms. Pham Thi Thanh Tra is a member of the Party Central Committee, 12th and 13th terms; a delegate of the 15th National Assembly.

During her long working time in Yen Bai province, Ms. Pham Thi Thanh Tra held the following positions: Deputy Head of the Department of Education and Training of Tran Yen district, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Tran Yen district, Deputy Secretary and then Secretary of the Provincial Youth Union, Head of the Provincial Party Committee's Propaganda Department, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee, Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee, Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of the Provincial People's Council.

In October 2020, she held the position of Deputy Head of the Central Organizing Committee and Deputy Minister of Home Affairs.

Since April 2021, Ms. Pham Thi Thanh Tra has held the position of Minister of Home Affairs.

On October 25, 2025, Ms. Pham Thi Thanh Tra was approved by the National Assembly to be appointed as Deputy Prime Minister for the 2021-2026 term, becoming the first female Deputy Prime Minister of Vietnam.
