On October 25th, Quang Tri Provincial General Hospital announced that its doctors had successfully implemented a complex vascular surgery technique, saving a traffic accident victim from having to have their leg amputated.
Patient HVD (17 years old, residing in Ben Quan commune, Quang Tri province) was admitted to the hospital with a severe injury to his right leg, his foot was cold and cyanotic.

Upon examination, the doctor determined that in addition to the fracture, the patient also had loss of signal in the popliteal artery and anterior tibial artery, indicating a high risk of amputation due to prolonged ischemia.
Doctors at Quang Tri Provincial General Hospital held an emergency consultation to perform surgery and save the patient. The surgical team fixed the patient's femur, explored the popliteal artery, and reconnected the tendons in the right foot.
During the examination, doctors discovered that the artery in the patient's right leg was trapped between the fractured bones, crushed, and blocked for nearly 20cm. Given the critical situation, the doctors decided to perform a "popliteal artery bypass graft" surgery to restore blood flow to the lower leg.
After more than four hours of effort by the doctors, blood flow from the patient's thigh to the lower leg was restored, the foot gradually warmed up, sensation returned, movement became possible, and vital signs stabilized.

According to doctors at Quang Tri Provincial General Hospital, popliteal artery injury is rare, and the amputation rate can reach 30-60% if not treated promptly, because the interrupted blood flow quickly leads to muscle necrosis and systemic complications.
Doctors at Quang Tri Provincial General Hospital emphasized that the successful surgery means preserving the aspirations and dreams of the 17-year-old boy. This also motivates the hospital's medical team to strive even harder in their journey to save lives.
