On October 25, Quang Tri General Hospital announced that its doctors had successfully performed a complex extravascular technique, helping a traffic accident patient avoid having to have his leg amputated.
Patient HVD (17 years old, residing in Ben Quan commune, Quang Tri province) was hospitalized with a seriously injured right leg and cold, purple feet.

Through examination, the doctor determined that in addition to the fracture, the patient also had loss of signal in the popliteal artery and anterior tibial artery, predicting a high risk of leg amputation due to prolonged ischemia.
Doctors at Quang Tri General Hospital held an emergency consultation to perform surgery to save the patient. The surgical team fixed the patient's femur, explored the popliteal artery, and connected the tendons in the right foot.
During the examination, the doctors discovered that the artery in the patient's right leg was stuck between the fracture, crushed and blocked for nearly 20cm. Faced with the critical situation, the doctors decided to perform a "popliteal artery bypass" surgery to restore blood flow to the lower leg.
After more than 4 hours of efforts by doctors, the blood flow from the thigh to the patient's calf was restored, the patient's feet gradually warmed up, he could feel and move, and his vital signs were stable.

According to doctors at Quang Tri General Hospital, popliteal artery injury is a rare condition, and the amputation rate can be up to 30-60% if not treated promptly, because interrupted blood flow will quickly lead to muscle necrosis and systemic complications.
Doctors at Quang Tri General Hospital emphasized that the successful surgery means keeping the ambitions and dreams of the 17-year-old boy alive. This is also the motivation for the hospital's medical team to make more efforts in the journey to save lives.
