On the morning of October 25th, Khanh Hoa General Hospital announced that doctors in the hospital's ear, nose, and throat department had just removed five live maggots from the ear of a 48-year-old female patient.
The patient had previously been brought to the hospital by family members with a severely swollen, draining, and painful ear.
Doctors examining the patient's ear discovered several white, wriggling objects inside the ear canal and removed five live maggots along with the carcass of an insect lying near the eardrum.
According to doctors, it is highly likely that during daily activities, insects crawled into the ear, built a nest, and laid eggs, which then hatched into maggots. If not detected in time, the patient could suffer a perforated eardrum, causing dangerous complications.
Khanh Hoa General Hospital advises people to keep their ears clean and dry, and to seek immediate medical attention if they experience any pain, itching, or unusual discharge.
For young children and those unable to clean their ears themselves, regular ear checks and cleanings are necessary to prevent similar problems.
