According to the conclusion of Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha, announced by the Government Office on December 11th, Long Thanh Airport needs to be positioned not only as a large-scale infrastructure project but also as an internationally competitive aviation destination, on par with and aiming to surpass leading airports in Southeast Asia.
To realize this goal, the Ministry of Construction has been tasked with directing the Vietnam Airports Corporation (ACV) and Vietnam Airlines to develop a set of criteria for evaluating the competitiveness of Long Thanh. These criteria focus on service quality and passenger experience, operational efficiency, connectivity, and transit capabilities within the regional aviation network.
In addition, the management agency requested a comprehensive review of the project's effectiveness, preparation for investment in a second runway and passenger terminal, utilization of existing machinery and resources, and early expansion of capacity to 50 million passengers and 1.5 million tons of cargo per year. These tasks are expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2026.
The Deputy Prime Minister also noted the need for competitive policies to attract international airlines, covering fees, ground services, maintenance, cargo transshipment, and image promotion, making Long Thanh a preferred choice in regional and international flight networks, and a new gateway for Vietnam to the world .

Alongside airport development, the connecting infrastructure system must also be promoted synchronously, including the Bien Hoa - Vung Tau, Ben Luc - Long Thanh expressways, and the Ring Roads 3 and 4 of Ho Chi Minh City. Ho Chi Minh City has been tasked with accelerating investment preparation, aiming to commence construction of the Thu Thiem - Long Thanh light rail line and the Suoi Tien - Dong Nai Provincial Administrative Center - Long Thanh Airport metro line in 2026.
Besides transportation infrastructure, Long Thanh is being developed as an aviation service ecosystem encompassing accommodation, hotels, conference facilities, commerce, healthcare, training, maintenance, logistics, a duty-free zone, and financial services. The goal is to gradually form an "airport city," a service and transit hub for Southeast Asia.
Earlier, during a field inspection on November 13th, General Secretary To Lam also requested that policies be implemented soon to attract international airlines, making Long Thanh a priority destination in the regional aviation network.
Phase 1 of Long Thanh Airport, covering 1,810 hectares, commenced construction on January 5, 2021, with a designed capacity of 25 million passengers and 1.2 million tons of cargo per year. Many key components have been completed, and flight testing and calibration were conducted from the end of September to the end of October. The airport is expected to begin technical operations next week and commercial operations by mid-2026.
