According to the draw for the men's singles table tennis event at the 33rd SEA Games, held on December 11th, the Vietnamese table tennis team has two players, Nguyen Anh Tu and Nguyen Duc Tuan, participating, but not Dinh Anh Hoang.
Previously, Dinh Anh Hoang had requested to change his competition event from men's doubles to men's singles, and the Vietnam Department of Sports and Physical Education approved his request. Vietnam then sent an email requesting the change of registration to the SEA Games 33 organizing committee, but it was not approved.
According to Tuoi Tre Online 's investigation, the reason the Vietnamese table tennis team was not allowed to change their competition registration was because the deadline had passed. The deadline for changing registrations for competition events ended in November.
The host country, Thailand, also stipulated that changes would be accepted in cases of force majeure such as athlete injury. However, Vietnam maintained its original registration. Accordingly, Nguyen Anh Tu and Nguyen Duc Tuan competed in the men's singles. Dinh Anh Hoang competed in men's doubles with Le Dinh Duc and mixed doubles with Tran Mai Ngoc.
Everything will go according to the original plan for Vietnamese table tennis. As seeded players, Anh Tú and Đức Tuân will both compete in easier groups and avoid having to face the reigning SEA Games gold medalist, the prodigy Quek Yong Izaac of Singapore.
Meanwhile, Dinh Anh Hoang is expected to team up with Tran Mai Ngoc to defend the mixed doubles gold medal they won at the 32nd SEA Games.
"The athletes are currently in their best form. My immediate expectation is that our athletes will advance to the semi-finals in their respective events, and from there we can think further."
"The host organizers in Thailand have created many difficulties not only for table tennis but also for other sports, so we really hope for the support of Vietnamese fans," said head coach Vu Van Trung.
The table tennis competition at the 33rd SEA Games will take place in Bangkok, Thailand. The Vietnamese table tennis team will begin their opening matches today (December 12th) in the team events. The men's and women's singles events will take place from December 18th.
