Minister of Health: "Violence against health workers is a very painful problem"

Regarding the incident that occurred at Nghe An Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital on the morning of October 23, Minister of Health Dao Hong Lan said she had directed the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management to coordinate with police agencies and local authorities to clarify the case and strictly handle the person who attacked the medical staff.

According to Minister of Health Dao Hong Lan, although the Law on Medical Examination and Treatment strictly prohibits acts of abuse against medical staff, in reality, cases of violence against medical staff still occur.

The Minister affirmed that the issue of violence against medical staff is a very painful issue in the industry and seriously affects hospital security and safety, the health and lives of medical staff as well as patients and their relatives.

In recent times, the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Public Security have issued Coordination Regulation No. 03 to ensure security and order in hospitals. This regulation has been implemented for more than 10 years and has brought positive results.

The Ministry of Health's view is that when assaults on medical staff occur, the perpetrators must be severely punished to serve as a deterrent.

“Medical staff must be protected under any circumstances,” the Minister affirmed.

The head of the health sector also sent a message to the patient's family and the people: "In emergency situations, doctors and medical staff must prioritize the treatment of critically ill patients. Therefore, it is necessary to sympathize, respect, and avoid behaviors and actions that cause anger, assault, and violence against the very doctors who are trying to treat patients."

Previously, the Ministry of Health decided to award certificates of merit from the Minister of Health to 1 group and 4 individuals of Nghe An Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital for their brave actions in preventing and protecting the safety of patients and their families in an emergency situation.

The list of recipients of certificates of merit from the Minister of Health includes: The collective of the Neonatal Department and 4 individuals: Ms. Nguyen Thuy Trang, Nguyen Thi Thu Hoai, Tran Thi Hong, Nguyen Thi Hong, all nurses of the Neonatal Department, Nghe An Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital.

At around 10:00 a.m. on October 23, in room 304, the Neonatal Department, Nghe An Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, Ban Van Vy (born in 1996, from Bac Ninh, residing in Que Phong commune, Nghe An), while taking care of his wife who had just given birth to twins, suddenly used a fruit knife to attack many people in the room, injuring 7 victims.

Among the victims, nurse Nguyen Thuy Trang suffered the most serious injuries with 11 stab wounds, including 4 fatal wounds in the neck and chest, hemorrhagic shock, right pleural effusion and had to undergo emergency surgery.
