Tet gift baskets are unsold, but traders say they are not worried about losing money

Discount but still unsold

Having packaged more than 20 gift baskets since the 25th of Tet, Ms. Anh Thuong (Long My district, Hau Giang province) has only sold 5 gift baskets so far. According to Ms. Thuong, the Tet gift baskets range in price from 100,000 - 250,000 VND and are all packaged by her at home. Although the products were launched early, only a few customers came to buy.

“I prepared the baskets and wrapping paper half a month ago. I imported confectionery, tea and wine to pack at home and put them up for sale on the 25th of Tet. However, the number of buyers was very small. On the 3rd of Tet, I reduced the price but the situation was not optimistic,” said Ms. Thuong.

Not much better, Ms. Kim Ngan's grocery store (Long My district, Hau Giang province) has reduced prices but customers are still not interested.

“Gift baskets will be more expensive than retail cakes because of the cost of packaging and boxes. This year, the economic situation is difficult, so consumers are also limiting their purchases. Since the sale, only 4-5 baskets have been sold, purchasing power has decreased by 60% compared to last year,” Ms. Ngan said.

There is still a chance to recover capital.

Although the purchasing power of Tet gift baskets has decreased, some retailers still do not express much concern because they can stock up to resell after Tet.

Ms. Kim Ngan said: “Last year, I sold 5-6 gift baskets after Tet. At that time, I took them out and put them together with the candy items at the store to sell together. Sales were a bit slow but I was able to get my capital back.”

“The capital I spent to buy candy and gift baskets to wrap is about ten million VND. Because I wrap them myself, I am less worried about losing money because I make a profit from the wrapping. If I don’t sell them all, I will sell them after Tet. Because this is a confectionery product that can be kept for a long time, I am not too worried,” Ms. Anh Thuong shared.

According to the reporter's records, Tet gift baskets at markets in Hau Giang province cost from 100,000 - 250,000 VND, and from 300,000 VND or more at stores and supermarkets. According to some traders, the purchasing power of Tet gift baskets in 2024 decreased by about 50-60% compared to 2023.
