With a typical hot and dry climate and suitable soil, localities in the southern region of Khanh Hoa province are promoting the development of new grape varieties that produce more delicious and beautiful fruit, thereby combining the development of agricultural tourism by bringing tourists to visit fruit-laden vineyards.

This summer, when visitors come to experience grape growing and enjoy juicy grapes in the vineyards here, they will surely have interesting emotions.

In Ninh Phuoc commune, Mr. Tong Minh Hai, one of the pioneer farmers in applying high technology to grape cultivation. On an area of about 1 hectare, Mr. Hai has boldly planted 6 grape varieties according to VietGAP standards and applied greenhouse technology to proactively adapt to climate change.

The combination of many years of experience and advanced grape growing techniques has helped Mr. Hai reap success with key grape varieties such as black grapes, black finger grapes and peony grapes, bringing outstanding economic efficiency.

Mr. Tong Minh Hai shared: “Currently, the farm grows 6 new grape varieties including black summer grapes, black fingers, peony, green grapes, Japanese pink grapes, and passion grapes. These grape varieties are easy to flower, produce large clusters, large fruits, and beautiful fruit appearance, so they are very popular with tourists. Depending on the quality, each type of grape has a selling price ranging from 70,000 VND - 300,000 VND/kg.”

Thanks to the application of high-tech agricultural models, Mr. Hai's family's vineyard is always full of fruit, with a beauty similar to that of grape farms in Europe, attracting many tourists to visit and enjoy fresh grapes right in the garden.

Sharing about this experience, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Thao, a tourist from Dong Thap province, said: "This is the first time I have been to a vineyard. I see that the way the vines are grown is very beautiful, planted in rows and carefully cared for. There are many clusters of fruit. When I tasted the fruit, it was very sweet."

Not only Ninh Phuoc, Thai An grape village with an area of about 200 hectares in Vinh Hai commune, located on provincial road 702 leading to Nui Chua National Park is also an ideal stop for tourists. Here, visitors can freely wander in the vast vineyards in the season of ripe fruit.

Currently, grape growers are urgently harvesting Red Cardinal grapes, Japanese pink grapes, candy grapes... to sell to traders; at the same time, they are opening their doors to welcome tourists to visit, enjoy fresh grapes and processed products from grapes such as grape jam, dried grapes, grape wine, grape syrup... right in the garden.

To enhance the appeal of fresh grapes in the market and attract tourists, Nha Ho Cotton Research and Agricultural Development Institute (under the Vietnam Academy of Agricultural Sciences - Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, located in Do Vinh ward, Khanh Hoa province) is actively researching and developing many new grape varieties. The goal is to create grape varieties with high productivity and beautiful appearance, contributing to serving the diverse needs of consumers and the tourism industry.

The Institute has been transferring a number of outstanding varieties to farmers, farms and cooperatives for production expansion, including seedless black finger grapes (NH04-102); new red grape varieties (NH01-16); pink grapes (NH01-102).

Mr. Pham Trung Hieu, Deputy Director of Nha Ho Cotton Research and Agricultural Development Institute, said: “In the process of researching new grape varieties, the Institute has also completed the technical cultivation process, ensured legal procedures for the announcement of circulation and protection of varieties, as well as built parent gardens to provide high-quality grape varieties to help farmers develop sustainable production.”

With more than 1,000 hectares of grapes, Khanh Hoa province is the locality with the largest grape growing area in the country, supplying the market with 26,000-28,000 tons of fresh grapes each year.

The diversity of new grape varieties grown according to the current high-tech agricultural model is opening up great economic potential, bringing in income of 500-600 million VND/ha/crop and from 1 to 1.2 billion VND/ha/year.
