From a young age, Nhat showed his talent when he liked brushes and colors. Whenever he saw an animal in front of him, he would immediately take out a pen and paper to draw it. Recalling his difficult childhood, Nhat said that at that time, he did not have money to buy comics, so he borrowed comics from his friends to draw. At the age of 16, Nhat chose a different direction when he applied to study at a silk painting establishment. Fulfilling his dream when he studied properly, Nhat's drawings became sharper and more graceful. He opened a painting studio at home, but the silk painting market was gloomy at that time, so he had to close it.
Although he had a profession in hand, Nhat's entrepreneurial path began at the age of 24. By chance, while walking on the walking street, Nhat saw conical hats for sale on stalls and suddenly thought that if he painted pictures of his homeland on them, tourists would love it. Nhat tried and realized that painting on conical hats was much more difficult than other types of paintings such as fabric paintings, paper paintings, etc. He failed many times when applying techniques and watercolors to conical hats because the colors would bleed and he lacked sophistication.
Not giving up, it took Nhat nearly a year to figure out how to mix different types of watercolors together in a certain ratio so that when he put the brush on the surface of the hat, it would no longer be smudged. The initial products that Nhat posted on social media received compliments from his friends. By 2022, when the tourism market recovered after the COVID-19 pandemic, Phan Quang Nhat's conical hats were increasingly favored by many souvenir shops, ordering in large quantities. He began to receive the first orders from the capital Hanoi.
To complete a painting on a conical hat, it takes many steps, from drawing the background, rough drawing to drawing each small detail. Depending on the size of the hat and the content of the painting, the completion time is also different. Nhat has a special hobby of drawing the scenery of the land where he was born, the image of a girl wearing ao dai with a conical hat, Truong Tien bridge or Thien Mu pagoda... The image is already in his mind, so he only needs to draw a work within 15 minutes. On average, Nhat can draw 20-30 paintings on conical hats every day.
The small Japanese painting workshop is always crowded with customers. On average, 30 to 50 groups of customers come to visit and experience each month. Each product is sold at affordable prices, from 70,000 to 150,000 VND depending on size and design. Japanese conical hat paintings are not only sold to tourists who come to visit and experience them as gifts, but are also available throughout the country, such as Hanoi , Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Nha Trang... Orders from Japan are increasing and Hue conical hats are also available in the West.
Talking about his future plans, Nhat said he wants to expand the painting area to attract more tourists. He is confident in his career path, which is difficult but still lives with his passion when painting with enthusiasm, plus the love and acceptance of consumers.
