On September 4th, speaking to Tuoi Tre Online , a representative of Gojek Vietnam stated: "We have decided to close our business operations in Vietnam starting September 16th, 2024."
Regarding this shocking decision, a Gojek representative stated that it is part of the parent company's (GoTo, headquartered in Indonesia) strategy to strengthen its business operations.
“This strategic decision was made to allow the company to focus on activities that can deliver a significant and sustainable impact on the market, in line with GoTo’s commitment to achieving sustainable long-term business growth,” a Gojek representative said.
A Gojek representative also extended sincere and heartfelt thanks to all employees, users, driver partners, and restaurant partners, describing them as "an indispensable part of our business operations in Vietnam."
Regarding responsibilities to partners on the platform, a Gojek representative stated: “We will provide the necessary support to all affected parties throughout this transition period, while complying with applicable regulations and laws.”
The ride-hailing market is fiercely competitive.
Gojek's decision to withdraw from the Vietnamese market highlights the fierce competition in the ride-hailing market, but also reflects a broader industry trend as companies reassess their market presence to optimize growth.
Similar moves have been seen at other companies like Shopee, which has withdrawn from all European and Latin American markets except Brazil.
Gojek is an on-demand service platform of the GoTo Group, operating on a multi-service ecosystem model, connecting users with a range of services, from transportation and food delivery to logistics and many others.
Gojek was founded in 2010, initially focusing on delivery and ride-hailing services, before launching its app in January 2015 in Indonesia. Since then, Gojek has grown into a leading on-demand service platform in Indonesia, expanding its operations to the Vietnamese and Singaporean markets.
