According to BGR , Google's software update support policy for the Pixel 8 series includes providing upgrades, new features, and security updates. The move comes after criticism from many users who said that Google did not support their older devices, something that Apple and Samsung both do better. Notably, the first Pixel line only received 3 years of support, causing users of such Pixel phones to miss out on all the features and improvements that Android and Google regularly add.
Pixel 8 series is committed to updates for up to 7 years
This isn’t the first time Google has tweaked its software update commitment. When it launched the Pixel 6, the company set a new standard with a five-year support commitment after release. But in reality, Android updates only last for three years, while security updates continue for five years.
The obvious benefit of this new standard is that Pixel 8 owners will no longer feel forced to buy a new Pixel phone every three years to get the most out of Android. Without the ability to update to new Android, that device will look very different from more modern devices. In addition to new features, security is another important component of the update.
Increasing update support is increasingly important as smartphones become not only repositories of personal data but also act as payment cards, bank accounts and social media accounts, making them easy targets for hackers.
