The user tracking feature on Google Maps will be permanently removed from September 2025 to ensure privacy and change development direction. All tracking data, including who is following and being followed, will be completely deleted. This feature was introduced in 2020 as part of Google Maps' efforts to "socialize".
Previously, Google quietly removed the business follow button from January 2025. After the change, users will no longer receive follow requests and profiles will have less interaction. Google encourages the community to move to the Local Guides Connect platform to share experiences. Users can still create listings, post photos, and review places as usual.
Recently, Android users also discovered that the music control button has "evaporated" from Google Maps without any warning from Google. According to reports from technology sites such as 9to5Google and Android Police, the options "Show media playback controls" and "Default media app" have also disappeared from the navigation settings. This forces users to leave the navigation screen to operate the music app, increasing the risk of losing focus while driving. The music control feature was a simple alternative to Google Assistant's Driving mode, which was discontinued in April. Ironically, the feature still works fine on the iOS version of Google Maps, with many suggesting the change may be related to the switch to the Gemini AI platform.
Google has not made any official announcement about removing this feature from Android. If this is a permanent change, Google will likely face a wave of criticism from its loyal user community.
