Google has just updated a small but notable change to the Google Messages app on Android, related to the Magic Compose feature and especially the "Magic Rewrite" ability. Specifically, the Magic Rewrite feature has been moved to a new location in the app.
Update 10/8: The Magic Rewrite change and text field expansion have now started rolling out to users of the stable version of Google Messages.
Detailed changes in the update
Magic Compose, which was introduced earlier, consists of two main parts. The first part helps users create automatic responses based on the last 20 messages to understand the context of the conversation. To access it, you just need to tap on the sparkling icon in the text field, next to the message library.
Compare old version and new updated version.
The second part, called Magic Rewrite, allows users to rewrite a composed message in different styles like Remix, Shakespeare, Chill, Lyrical, Excited or Formal. Previously, this feature was accessed right from the compose text field, but with the new update, Google has moved it to the 'plus' menu – which houses options like Gallery, GIFs, Stickers, Files, Location, Contacts, Schedule Send and Selfie GIFs. The feature is now called "Magic Rewrite".
Another change is that the text field seems to be a bit wider than before, making it easier for users to compose messages. While this change is not too big, it still brings a more comfortable experience when typing.
Magic Compose and device requirements
Magic Compose will run directly on the device if your phone supports the Gemini Nano processor. In case the device does not support it, the feature will work through the cloud and requires the user to have a Google One account to use.
Deployment and testing
We've noticed this change appearing on some devices running the latest beta version of Google Messages (version _20240916_01_RC00). However, Magic Rewrite isn't yet widely available to all users.
