Google hopes the deal will provide a low-carbon solution to power its data centers.

The Guardian reported on October 15 that Google has just signed an agreement to buy energy from many small nuclear reactors to have enough electricity supply needed for the increased use of artificial intelligence (AI).

The US technology company has ordered six or seven small nuclear reactors (SMRs) from Kairos Power (California), with the first expected to be completed in 2030 and the remaining in 2035.

Google hopes the deal will provide a low-carbon solution to power data centers, which have high electricity demands. Google, which is owned by Alphabet, said nuclear provides “24/7 clean power that can help meet electricity needs reliably.”

The locations of the new plants and financial details of the deal have not been disclosed. Google has agreed to buy a total of 500 megawatts of electricity from Kairos Power, which was founded in 2016 and is building a demonstration reactor in Tennessee, scheduled to be completed in 2027.

The grid needs new sources of power to support AI technologies that are driving major scientific advances, improving services for businesses and customers, and driving national competitiveness and economic growth, said Michael Terrell, senior director of energy and climate at Google.

“This agreement helps accelerate new technologies to meet energy needs cleanly and reliably, while unleashing the full potential of AI for everyone,” he said.

The explosive growth of generative AI and cloud storage has increased the demand for electricity by tech companies.

Last month, Microsoft reached an agreement to supply power from the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant in Pennsylvania, activating the plant for the first time in five years. This is the site of the most serious nuclear accident in U.S. history, in March 1979.

Amazon bought a nuclear-powered data center in March from independent power producer Talen Energy.
