The US State Department announced on November 30 that it had suspended its Strategic Partnership with Georgia, after the Georgian Dream party decided to suspend its accession process to the European Union (EU).
On social network X, US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller wrote: "We condemn the excessive use of force against the Georgian people when they were demonstrating legitimately against this unconstitutional action (joining the EU) - the EU is a shield against the Kremlin. Therefore, we have suspended the Strategic Partnership with Georgia."
On the same day, Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili accused the country's parliament of being illegitimate after the election in October and that she has no intention of leaving office when her term ends in December. Accordingly, Ms. Zourabichvili affirmed that the presidency is still the only legitimate institution in the country.
The Georgian president made the statement amid protests in the Georgian capital Tbilisi and other cities that began after Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze announced this week that Georgia had abandoned its accession talks with the European Union.
