During a recent friendly against Celtic, Sporting fans held up two banners in response to Gyokeres' decision. The first banner read: "We don't cry for those who leave, I'm happy for those who stay."
A second banner was unfurled in the second half, aimed at Gyokeres and reading: "No one is above the interests of the club, no matter who they are." This banner also had the message "Focus on the club", showing support for the team under coach Rui Borges.
These banners show that Sporting fans are ready for a new season without Gyokeres. Hopes of keeping the Swedish star striker are increasingly slim.
Over the past two years, Gyokeres has become Sporting's star man - scoring 97 goals in 102 appearances, including 54 last season.
Gyokeres expressed his determination to move to the Premier League this summer, choosing Arsenal as his next destination in his career. However, the lengthy negotiations between the two sides left Gyokeres unhappy. He decided not to participate in training at Sporting and waited for the day to move to a new club.
Sporting president Frederico Varandas has warned Gyokeres of possible disciplinary action. However, the striker has stood firm.
