New rice varieties account for nearly 70%
In the 2024 Spring crop, Ms. Bui Thi Lan (Tien Duoc commune, Soc Son district) continues to use the TBR225 rice variety. This is a short-term rice variety with good resistance to pests and diseases. According to Ms. Lan, the rice yield is estimated to be about 2.2 quintals/sao; the quality of the cooked rice is fragrant and sticky.
Not only Mrs. Lan’s family, farmers in Soc Son district are gradually “popularizing” new, advanced, high-quality rice varieties in recent crop seasons. The most widely used varieties are TBR225, HD11, J02, Dai Thom 8, Bac Thom No. 7…
Head of the Economic Department of Soc Son District, Hoang Thi Ha, said that in the 2024 Spring crop, the entire district will cultivate nearly 9,400 hectares of rice, of which more than 90% will use quality rice varieties. The area for cultivating Khang Dan rice varieties will only account for about 9.7% (exceeding the target of reducing to 12 - 14% from the beginning of the crop); the rest are hybrid rice varieties.
Soc Son district is considered a bright spot in the introduction of new rice varieties into cultivation. On a city-wide scale, the conversion of rice production towards commodities through the use of new varieties with high productivity and quality is also being actively and widely implemented.
According to statistics from the Hanoi Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection, in the 2024 Spring crop, the city planted more than 81,000 hectares of rice, exceeding the planned target from the beginning of the crop. Of which, the proportion of high-quality rice varieties put into cultivation accounted for nearly 70%. Notably, this proportion is increasing year by year.
Rice yield is about 62 tons/ha
Along with encouraging the introduction of new rice varieties with high productivity and quality into cultivation, Hanoi has promoted solutions to promote mechanization in sowing, care and harvesting. The improved sowing method SRI (shallow hand planting, small stalks…) is being applied more and more popularly.
Since the beginning of the 2024 Spring crop, the work of planning, forecasting, and preventing pests and diseases has been closely monitored by the Hanoi Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection. On that basis, timely recommendations for effective prevention solutions have been made. In general, pests and diseases of Spring rice have been relatively well controlled.
According to Head of the Hanoi Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection Luu Thi Hang, the unit has recently coordinated with the General Statistics Office to evaluate the results of spring rice production in 2024 in some localities. Preliminary rice yield is estimated at about 62 quintals/ha.
In the context of being affected by weather, natural disasters, and complex pest and disease situations, the rice yield of 62 quintals/ha is considered a great effort of Hanoi's agricultural sector. Along with doing a good job of pest and disease prevention, promoting the use of new high-quality rice varieties in production is an important factor.
Deputy Director of Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Manh Phuong said that in the coming seasons, the agricultural sector will continue to coordinate with localities to increase information and propaganda so that people can actively use new high-yield, high-quality rice varieties in cultivation. Promote the application of mechanization in the stages of land preparation, sowing, spraying pesticides, and harvesting rice to reduce labor for farmers.
To improve the efficiency of rice cultivation, the Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Rural Development will study and expand the areas for producing high-quality, concentrated rice on a large scale; apply organic farming processes and VietGAP; at the same time, continue to build and promote production and consumption chains, creating stable output for the capital's rice.
Hanoi plans to complete harvesting the entire 2024 Spring rice crop before June 20. In addition, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development is also asking localities that have completed the Spring rice harvest to focus on mobilizing and guiding people to start producing seedlings to sow the 2024 Summer-Autumn crop, ensuring the correct time frame and progress of the plan set out at the beginning of the year.
