Tens of thousands of US and South Korean troops to hold 'Freedom Shield' exercise

The exercises will reflect “realistic threats” across all domains, such as missiles as well as GPS jamming, cyber attacks and lessons learned from recent incidents, according to statements from the two countries’ militaries.

The South Korean-US alliance will further strengthen its defense capabilities and posture against weapons of mass destruction, said Col. Lee Sung-jun, spokesman for the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff. At the same time, the South Korean military will support the Ulchi civil defense exercises, which will simulate a nuclear attack from North Korea.

About 19,000 South Korean troops will participate in 48 rounds of combined field training, including field exercises, live-fire exercises and amphibious landing exercises. The annual exercise is one of the largest in the Indo- Pacific region, said Col. Ryan Donald, a spokesman for U.S. Forces Korea.

North Korea has long criticized the United States and its allies for raising tensions with military exercises, calling them rehearsals for nuclear war. However, Seoul and Washington insist that the exercises are defensive in nature.
