The suspicious silence of the "algorithm"
Shopee often boasts about its technology ecosystem, where AI algorithms optimize user experience and boost sales. But why, with the same technology, is Shopee inexplicably powerless against large-scale counterfeit goods vendors?

It's not difficult to spot stalls exhibiting unusual behavior: prices significantly lower than the official listed price, thousands of 5-star reviews from "fake" accounts, and an abnormally high rate of product sales.
If the police can use professional techniques to track the money flow and dismantle these networks in a short time, then there's no reason why an e-commerce platform with top-notch data capabilities like Shopee couldn't detect them sooner.
The fact that numerous fake online stores continue to exist, run advertisements, and reap illicit profits right on Shopee's "home turf" reveals lax management, or even tolerance, due to the advertising fees and commissions these stores contribute.
Using consumers as a "shield"
The danger lies in the fact that Shopee usually only takes action when there is intervention from law enforcement or when scandals are exposed by the press. In such cases, the common solution is to lock the store and remove products. This is a reactive, "blindfolded" approach.
Meanwhile, millions of consumers have fallen into the trap, spending real money on counterfeit goods, only to face disappointment and health and safety risks. As for Shopee, after shutting down a store, they quickly replace it with new shops under different names, but maintain the same operating methods.
Shopee's lack of mechanisms to prevent violations at the source – for example, permanently banning violators (based on ID, account number, identifying information) – shows that the platform prioritizes maintaining "the number of active shops" over "the quality of products on the platform".
Break down the "shield" of intermediaries.
The argument that Shopee is merely an "intermediary platform" is no longer valid in today's market. When Shopee collects service fees and advertising fees and directly profits from each successful transaction, the platform is no longer an innocent intermediary. Shopee is the direct beneficiary and bears joint responsibility for the origin of goods sold on its platform.
It's time for Shopee to fundamentally change its governance processes:
- Strict Know Your Customer (KYC) verification: "Anonymous" vendors or those using forged documents for registration are not permitted.
- Proactive monitoring: Instead of waiting for the police to "knock on the door," the exchange should have a dedicated department to monitor unusual signals regarding prices and product origins 24/7.
- Transparency of information: Instead of silently deleting violations, publicly disclose the list of infringing entities so that consumers have the right to know and avoid them.
Consumers choose Shopee for its convenience and variety, not to become victims of "counterfeit empires." If Shopee continues to maintain its lax management attitude, prioritizing profit above all else and neglecting responsibility, then the trust of its users – the platform's greatest asset – will gradually erode.
Power comes with responsibility. Shopee already possesses the power of a leading e-commerce platform; now it's time for them to demonstrate responsibility commensurate with their role as the "gatekeeper" of the market.
