The large pod of whales that Waddington encountered at sea.
Tom Waddington was sailing from the Canadian island of Newfoundland to England on July 7 when he found himself surrounded by long-finned pilot whales, he said in an Instagram post.
“This is amazing. There’s a pod of whales swimming around the boat and playing. I love them but I’m scared they’re going to hit my rudder. They’re so close, you know?” Waddington said in the video .

At one point he panicked when a whale charged straight into the boat, causing him to drop his camera and have to stop filming.
As the recording continued, Waddington's voice sounded worried.
“I have two hours to hang out with these thousands of whales,” he said as the camera rolled back.
“One had hit the boat earlier but I didn’t know what to do. I couldn’t believe it. It was an amazing sight but also scary,” he said.
The group monitoring Waddington's journey from land said the whales eventually swam away and allowed him to continue rowing back to shore.
Waddington embarked on an arduous 2,000-nautical-mile journey to raise money for MindCharity, a British non-profit that supports people with mental illness.
