Candidates take the second round of the competency assessment exam at Ho Chi Minh City University of Science (District 5) on June 2.

3 main reasons

Immediately after receiving the second round of the competency assessment test scores from Ho Chi Minh City National University, 1,000 candidates created a group on Zalo called "HCM National University Competency Assessment Exam Appeal" in the hope of finding people in the same situation. In a survey conducted in this group, 113 candidates said they had filed for an appeal, while 44 others were preparing to do so, as of 12:00 this morning, June 12.

At the same time, in a survey conducted by Thanh Nien , 249/257 candidates said they had submitted an application for a review or were considering it. Of those, 62.6% were "absolutely certain" that their scores would be raised after the review; the three groups of candidates who said they were most often graded incorrectly were social sciences (61.1%), Vietnamese (50.2%), and natural sciences (43.6%).

Candidate taking second round of competency assessment: 'I think this time the score will be very high'

235 survey participants, accounting for 91.4%, also said this was the second time taking the competency assessment exam in 2024.

According to the summary based on the survey answers, there are 3 main reasons why candidates want to review. Firstly, after consulting the suggested answers of some units, candidates said that they had been deducted more points than expected. Secondly, many candidates said that although they answered the same questions as their friends, these people got higher scores. Finally, candidates said that the scores in some parts were related to the exam block (such as social sciences for block C or natural sciences for blocks A, B), so the results could not be as low as the scores they just received.

Survey results of 257 candidates taking the second round of the 2024 capacity assessment exam

"I got 2 math questions wrong but 58 points were deducted", "I got 3 small questions wrong in social sciences but only got 80/200 points", "I studied social sciences but my social science exam score was only 92 points", "I took the B block exam but my natural science score was 80/300", "I have IELTS 7.5 but my English score is only 100/200"... are some of the reasons given by candidates after they said they had submitted a request for a review.

As one of the candidates who submitted a request for review to Ho Chi Minh City National University on June 11, Trinh Thi Thai An, a student at An Thoi High School (Phu Quoc City), said she was "quite panicked" when she received her exam score because it was 100 points lower than expected. "For example, in the Vietnamese subject, I was confident that I got 17/20 questions correct and only got a few basic questions wrong, which I thought would be a small score, but in the end, the result was 140/200 points, lower than those who got 4-5 questions wrong," An said.

An said she did not know if her low score was due to the grading process or her own fault. However, because she believed in herself and saw many other similar cases, the female student decided to re-examine her exam score with a fee of 100,000 VND. "Not only Vietnamese, the rest of the sections were also quite different from what I expected," the female student shared.

Graduated from high school in 2017 and took the last two competency assessment exams with the desire to become a teacher, Nguyen Cat Tuong, a former student of Thai Binh Duong University (Nha Trang City), said: "The first round, my score was not as expected because my knowledge was fading, but then I focused on studying thoroughly to take the second round. However, the scores I just received in some sections were lower than the first round, so I filed a request for a review," Tuong said.

Previously, Thanh Nien also recorded many candidates studying natural sciences but all achieved 16/300 points in this exam, which was considered "unreasonable" by the candidates.

"After submitting the appeal application, I scanned and took a screenshot of the fee transfer to send via email. I sent it at 9:30 p.m. last night (June 11), and by 11 p.m. the same day, Ho Chi Minh City National University confirmed it and informed me that the results would be sent on June 20. I hope the school can reconsider my exam code 237 results," she added.

Looking forward to hearing about the scoring method

Having just submitted an application for a review of the competency assessment test scores to Ho Chi Minh City National University, a candidate in Binh Duong said that his scores were "different" from expectations, especially in the Vietnamese and social sciences sections. Another question pointed out by this male student was that for the same Vietnamese question related to Mother's Day, 2 candidates chose 2 different answers but both achieved the maximum score of 200 in this section.

"I really hope that Ho Chi Minh City National University can explain specifically about how to score the competency assessment test, such as the range of scores for a question that is chosen correctly by many or few candidates, and the minimum and maximum points a question can achieve," the male student confided.

PHT, a student at Nguyen Thi Minh Khai High School (HCMC), shares the same opinion. T. added that although he has taken the competency assessment exam three times (the first time was in the second round in 2023 when he was in 11th grade), he has never seen the exam marking process "have as many problems" as it does now. "From technical errors in 2 questions, to many students getting 16/300 points in natural sciences despite taking the natural sciences exam, and now many students have their scores 'skewed' too high," the male student said.

"I took the A00 exam (math, physics, chemistry) and won more than 20 chess medals at the district and city levels, so I was quite sad when I learned that my second round score was only 779, 76 points lower than the first round," said T.

Please extend the registration schedule.

Because June 15 is the deadline for registration or adjustment of wishes, while the results of the review will not be available until June 20, many candidates also expressed concern about missing the opportunity. "I hope the school will postpone the registration deadline after June 20 so that we can make a more accurate decision," Thai An suggested. Meanwhile, HT shared: "If you live far away and the school requires you to directly submit the second round of score reports, it will be very difficult."
