At 4:00 AM on February 5th (the 26th day of the 12th lunar month) at Tan Son Nhat Airport, many passengers were present, hastily pulling their luggage to complete airline procedures before boarding their flights to return home for the Lunar New Year holiday.
Currently, Tan Son Nhat Airport is under constant stress, with frequent flight delays. According to statistics from the Tan Son Nhat Airport Operations Center, from 0:00 on February 1st to 16:00 on February 3rd (22nd-24th of the 12th lunar month), the airport handled over 1,100 flights. Of these, 659 flights were delayed, accounting for nearly 60%.
A month ago, Thuc Nhi booked a flight home for Tet (Lunar New Year) on the 25th of the 12th lunar month, but was informed that her flight had been changed to early this morning (the 26th of the 12th lunar month). After checking in, Nhi received another notification that flight VJ 640 to Da Nang had been delayed until evening.
"I arrived here at 2 a.m. this morning. Now the airline has announced a flight delay, so I have to take a taxi back home and come back to the airport tonight," Nhi said.
At 5 AM today, the queues at the check-in and baggage drop-off counters of Vietnam Airlines , Bamboo Airways, and Vietjet Air were packed with people.
Many airlines have crowded online check-in areas. Tan Son Nhat's volunteer team has been reinforced to assist passengers in completing check-in procedures quickly.
The Lunar New Year holiday lasts 7 days, so many passengers bring large pieces of luggage. Many people carry New Year's gifts such as cakes, candies, and even branches of flowers and apricot blossom trees as they travel back to their hometowns.
Long lines of passengers queued closely together to move towards the check-in counters. During the peak period of the Lunar New Year (Year of the Dragon), it is expected that there will be approximately 860-900 flights to and from Tan Son Nhat Airport each day, with an average of 135,000-140,000 passengers.
The impatient man kept checking his watch as he stood in line for too long. Many flights were about to depart, but passengers who hadn't yet checked in were being directed by staff to go ahead and complete the check-in process in time.
Representatives from Tan Son Nhat International Airport said that during the Lunar New Year of the Year of the Dragon, the airport expects to serve 850-880 flights per day.
Of these, the peak day will be February 6th (the 27th day of the 12th lunar month), with more than 920 flights carrying over 150,000 passengers, an increase of 9-10% compared to Tet 2023.
