In 2007, I was accepted to work for Ninh Thuan Newspaper and worked on the Trade Union page. I still remember clearly the first morning I received my assignment at the editorial office. At that time, I was assigned to cover the year-end conference of trade union activities organized by the Provincial Labor Federation. Although I had learned about the trade union organization and prepared myself mentally for my first time working, the feeling when I first attended and reported on the conference, I felt like I was entering a completely different world - quite tense and confused...
The first newsletter was sent with a mixture of anxiety and hope. Despite my best efforts, the returned manuscript was full of red corrections. The section chief gently said: “You lack the skills to synthesize reports. But it’s okay for the first time, keep trying!”. Until now, I am still grateful for that encouraging statement, helping me not to be discouraged.
Determined to complete the assigned tasks, I continued to search for documents, learn deeply about the organizational structure, roles, tasks... of the trade union organization; learn about labor laws, read articles by senior colleagues on the newspaper's Trade Union page to understand more information about the situation of trade union activities and union members and workers in the province, as well as to learn how to write, express, improve professional skills, and writing skills. Not only studying through books, I spent time "traveling a lot, writing a lot", approaching the grassroots, working directly, exchanging information with trade union organizations at all levels, especially with union members and workers... I myself once stood in the midday sun, sweating profusely, just to hear the whole story of a worker who was owed 3 months of wages; or ate a plate of "street food" with female workers for 6,000 VND... It was these everyday experiences that gave me life experience, emotions and motivation to travel and write.
With diligence and serious work, I quickly caught up with the job and gradually improved my skills and expertise. The articles were no longer dry with data, but became lively, soulful, and high quality. In addition to the Trade Union page, I was assigned by the leader to be in charge of propaganda in a number of other areas such as: Reflecting on readers' petitions, health care ...
After nearly 20 years of working on the Trade Union website, I boldly share with my colleagues, especially young people who are new to the profession, some of my personal experiences:
- Have a solid understanding of trade union organizations: This is a prerequisite, because you cannot write without understanding. Reporters need to have a firm grasp of the functions, structures, and roles of trade unions, in order to not only reflect correctly but also provide a thorough view, contributing to orienting public opinion.
- Maintain close relationships with trade unions at all levels. To quickly access the grassroots, support from the trade union system is indispensable. They are companions and extremely important information bridges for reporters.
- Stay close to the grassroots, quickly grasp the situation of businesses, work, and life of union members and workers. Information does not come from the desk, to have a good article, you have to go there, hear with your own ears, see with your own eyes. It must be understood that each activity, program, each business, each union member, each worker has a "story" that is worth listening to and cherishing.
- Grasp the Party's guidelines and policies, understand the State's policies and laws: The press plays a role in connecting and propagating the Party's guidelines and policies, the State's policies and laws to workers, and at the same time reflects the shortcomings, difficulties, thoughts and aspirations... of union members and workers to all levels and functional sectors. Therefore, grasping the Party's guidelines and policies, understanding the State's policies and laws is extremely important to ensure that the articles reflect accurately, truthfully, with quality and in the right direction.
Working as a journalist in the field of trade unions, I understand that writing about labor is not just reporting or recording, it is a companionship, where the voice of workers is expressed honestly, sincerely and responsibly.
