Thai referee Songkran Bunmeekiart showed a straight red card, sending off Jaime Rosquillo. After that, the Laos and Philippines players clashed three more times but the referee was able to control them all. The Thai referee also faced strong reactions from head coach Christopher Pedimonte when he said the Philippines deserved a penalty after the first half. In the second half, he showed a yellow card to Laos coach Guglielmo Arena for also reacting.

The Philippines opened the scoring in the 23rd minute thanks to a tricky header by Selwyn Mamon. In the 39th minute, Laos equalized 1-1 thanks to captain Khamsa Nga Phimmasone, from a wrong punch by goalkeeper Enrico Mangaoang.

After playing with one less player, the Philippines unexpectedly found a goal to increase the score to 2-1 in the third minute of injury time of the second half. Yrick Gallantes skillfully dribbled the ball down the left wing past two Lao players, before crossing for Dennis Chung to score. However, the Philippines could not protect the result when goalkeeper Mangaoang made a second mistake in the fifth minute of injury time. From a shot from a narrow right wing by Souphan Khambai On, the Philippine goalkeeper closed the angle incorrectly and let the ball slip through his hands into the net.

With a 2-2 draw, the Philippines and Laos face difficulty in finding tickets to the semi-finals, as they will meet defending champion Vietnam in the final match of the group stage.
