Bloomberg reports that Apple is about to launch a new product category: wall-mounted displays that can control home appliances, participate in video conferencing, and use AI to navigate apps.
Citing sources close to the matter, Bloomberg reports that Apple may announce the device around March 2025 and position it as a home control center. The product, codenamed J490, will also feature Apple Intelligence AI capabilities.
CEO Tim Cook is betting that the product will transform Apple into a major force in the smart home market, where the company is currently lagging behind rivals Google and Amazon.
As a priority for the engineering and design departments, the device is being developed at an accelerated pace for market launch after more than three years of development.

According to Bloomberg , the device will feature a nearly 6-inch screen and, like the square iPad, thick bezels surrounding the screen, a camera at the top edge, a rechargeable battery, and speakers. It is expected to come in two colors: black and silver.
The device's interface is like a combination of the Apple Watch operating system and the iPhone's Standby mode. However, the company predicts that most people will interact with the device using voice commands thanks to Siri and Apple Intelligence.
The hardware is designed around App Intents, a system that allows AI to precisely control applications and tasks.
The product will be marketed as a way to control home appliances, chat with Siri, and have video calls via FaceTime. It comes equipped with Apple apps, including a web browser, news feed, and music player.
Users can also access notes and calendars or turn the device into a slideshow display.
The device will compete with Amazon's Echo Show and Echo Hub smart displays and Google's Nest Hub. The expected price is comparable to its competitors: the Echo Show at $150, the Echo Hub at $180, and the Nest Hub Max at $230.
Sources reveal that the product is designed to bring Siri and Apple Intelligence closer to users in ways never before possible. Last month, Apple launched several Apple Intelligence features for iPhone, iPad, and Mac.
Advanced features such as AI image creation and ChatGPT integration from OpenAI will be rolled out in December.
The screen will incorporate sensors to determine the distance from people and automatically adjust its features. For example, if the user is far away, the screen will display the temperature; when they get closer, it will switch to a control panel to change the temperature.
Security will be a key focus for the new device, providing security alerts and displaying video from security cameras, including video from the smart doorbell. It also serves as an intercom system between rooms in the house.
The product is a standalone device, meaning it operates almost completely automatically. However, it requires an iPhone for some tasks, including initial setup.
The project is a collaboration between different Apple teams, including the in-house hardware engineering team led by Matt Costello and the software engineering ecosystem team led by Arun Mathias.
Human and industrial interface design teams also participated actively.
Apparently, this isn't the only new product Apple is "working on." According to veteran analyst Ming Chi Kuo, the iPhone maker is looking to enter the home security camera market and plans to mass-produce them in 2026.
According to Kuo, the camera will interact with other devices from the same manufacturer via wireless connection, giving it an advantage over other camera manufacturers.
