Working group with representative of slaughterhouse owner
On June 2, the interdisciplinary delegation of Hau Giang province inspected the Nguyen Dan and Dung Nga slaughterhouses. These two units process for CP Vietnam Livestock Joint Stock Company (CP Vietnam) located in the province.
The content of the inspection and verification is related to the official dispatch of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Soc Trang province requesting clarification of images of sick pigs according to people's reflections with notes taken in Hau Giang province.
At about 9:30 a.m. the same day, the delegation arrived at Dung Nga facility (next to National Highway 1, Long Thanh commune, Phung Hiep district).
This facility is owned by Ms. Tran Thi Nga, currently gathering about 500 pigs from CP Vietnam. According to the owner, each day they slaughter an average of 30-40 pigs, depending on the time.
What did the slaughterhouse owner say?
Regarding the image of a sick pig allegedly recorded at around 2:30 a.m. on March 26, 2022, which the person accusing the Vietnamese government posted on social media, Mr. Nguyen Chi Cuong, representative of the owner of the slaughterhouse, confirmed that the image was taken at this facility.
Mr. Cuong explained that the pigs were imported in a healthy condition, with full quarantine papers. However, during the slaughter process, due to the long time, one pig showed “abnormal symptoms”.
“As soon as we discovered it, we reported it to the company for handling. The company staff directly took pictures and sent them via Zalo to report and request destruction,” said Mr. Cuong.
According to the representative of the facility owner, the process of destroying the product was documented with confirmation from the veterinarian, company staff and the slaughterhouse. The pig in the picture was found to have “abnormal signs” and was handled according to regulations.
"If that pig is not destroyed but is released to the market, the veterinarian will definitely make a record and not allow it to be taken out," Mr. Cuong added.
Mr. Cuong continuously affirmed that the destruction of the above-mentioned pig was true, in accordance with the procedure, and there was absolutely no transfer of supply to Soc Trang or any other place.
Mr. Cuong affirmed that there was no such thing as supplying sick pigs to the Soc Trang market.
At about 10:25, Mr. Ha Huu Tam, representative of the Vietnamese Government in Hau Giang, was present to work with the inspection team.
He confirmed that the images of the sick pigs were posted on social media by Mr. LQN, a former employee of the company. However, Mr. Tam did not know how Mr. N. obtained these images.
Mr. Tam confirmed that the image was taken at Dung Nga slaughterhouse and kept for reporting to the company. “The pig was then destroyed at the slaughterhouse by cooking and repurposing it for fish feed,” said a representative of CP Vietnam.
When the inspection team asked for documents proving the destruction of the aforementioned pig, Mr. Tam asked permission to call another person. This person then provided the team with a piece of paper ( content unknown - PV).
Mr. Tam worked with the interdisciplinary delegation of Hau Giang province.
At about 11:40 a.m., the interdisciplinary team worked separately with relevant parties.
Mr. Trinh Hung Cuong, Head of the Provincial Department of Animal Husbandry, Veterinary and Fisheries, said that through this verification activity, existing problems will be promptly corrected and unclear points will be clarified, thereby ensuring objectivity and impartiality in handling the case.
“We require the owner of the slaughterhouse, employees of CP Vietnam Company and the slaughter control staff to have a full and honest report on the entire incident. After synthesizing, the inspection team will have an official report to the Board of Directors of the Department of Agriculture and Environment for consideration and direction on the next course of action,” said Mr. Cuong.
