(CPV) - Coach Philippe Troussier was selected into the list of 10 best coaches in Asian Cup history on the homepage of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).
Established in 1956, the Asian Cup tournament has been held every four years for 17 seasons. The 18th season will take place in Qatar from January 12 to February 10, 2024.
To "warm up" the tournament before the competition, AFC honored the 10 best coaches in history, including captain Philippe Troussier - who is leading the Vietnamese team. The French expert's achievement was helping the Japanese team win the Asian championship in 2000.
AFC's homepage introduces Mr. Troussier: "Appointed in 1998 after nearly a decade of coaching in Africa, French strategist Philippe Troussier led Japan to their second Asian Cup title in Lebanon in 2000. The "Blue Samurai" scored 21 goals in just 6 matches, before defeating defending champions Saudi Arabia in the final in Beirut. And now, Troussier will try to lead the Vietnamese team to success at the upcoming tournament in Qatar."
In the history of participating in the Asian Cup, the best achievement of the Vietnamese team is reaching the quarter-finals. This is also the milestone that Coach Troussier hopes to surpass during his 4-year term in Vietnam.
Besides the captain of the Vietnam National Team, many other famous coaches are also on this list, including: Alberto Zaccheroni (champion in 2011 with the Japanese team), Jorvan Vieira (2007, Iraq), Khalil Al Zayani (1984, Saudi Arabia), Mohammad Ranjbar (1972, Iran), Heshmat Mohajerani (1976, Iran), Carlos Alberto Parreira (1980, Kuwait and 1998, Saudi Arabia), Ange Postecoglou (2015, Australia), Zico (2004, Japan) and Felix Sanchez (2019, Qatar).
