According to a research team led by astrophysicist Matthew Graham of the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), the incident may have been caused by a supermassive black hole, with a mass 500 million times that of the Sun, swallowing an unfortunate star that flew too close to the black hole. "The energetic results show that the supermassive black hole is very distant and very bright. It is unlike any active galactic nucleus (AGN) we have ever seen," said astrophysicist Matthew. Photo: NASA, ESA and J. Olmsted (STScI).

The supermassive black hole’s “devouring” of a star was first recorded in 2018. The black hole, known as J2245+3743, suddenly brightened significantly by 40 times over several months, peaking at 30 times brighter than the previous most powerful AGN outburst. Image: NOIRLab/NSF/AURA/J. da Silva.
