Supporting women's access to clean water and sanitation contributes to implementing the '3 clean' criteria

(DN) - On the morning of October 16, in Dong Nai, the Central Committee of the Vietnam Women's Union (VWU) coordinated with the People's Committee of Dong Nai province to organize a workshop on Advocating for policies to support women in accessing clean water and sanitation, contributing to the implementation of the "3 clean" criteria and promoting gender equality in the National Target Program (NTP) on new rural construction (NTM) for the period 2026-2035.

Attending the event were comrades: Nguyen Thi Thu Hien, Vice President of Vietnam Women's Union; Nguyen Thi Hoang, Provincial Party Committee member, Vice President of Dong Nai Provincial People's Committee; Le Thi Thanh Loan, Provincial Party Committee member, Vice President of Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of the province, President of Dong Nai Provincial Women's Union.

Speaking at the opening of the workshop, Vice President of the Vietnam Women's Union Nguyen Thi Thu Hien said: The National Target Program on New Rural Development, after more than a decade of implementation, has completely changed the socio -economic landscape of rural areas in Vietnam.

With their roles and responsibilities, the Women's Union at all levels across the country have proactively and actively participated in many contents of the program. One of the most prominent marks is that the Campaign to Build a Family of 5 Nos and 3 Cleans has been legalized, becoming an official component of the National Target Program on New Rural Construction. Since 2022, the Central Union has chaired the research and development of a Toolkit for monitoring gender equality in New Rural Construction.

In particular, in the field of clean water and sanitation, with technical and financial support from UNICEF for the period 2021-2025, the association has implemented activities to support 6 provinces in developing a Project to Support Women's Access to Clean Water and Sanitation. This result affirms that the role of the association does not stop at implementing movements, but also participates in proposing a gender-sensitive policy monitoring mechanism, an important and meaningful management tool.

However, in addition to the achievements, it is necessary to frankly acknowledge the policy gaps and barriers that need to be thoroughly resolved in the coming period.

Vice President of the Vietnam Women's Union Nguyen Thi Thu Hien said: Dong Nai is not only known as one of the leading localities in the country in building new rural areas, steadily moving towards the goal of advanced and exemplary new rural areas, but also a model of dynamic socio-economic development in the Southern key economic region. Therefore, the Central Committee of the Vietnam Women's Union chose Dong Nai as the venue for the workshop to listen to the experiences, lessons and challenges of Dong Nai in implementing the National Target Program on building new rural areas in general and the content related to clean water and sanitation in particular.

At the workshop, representatives of the Vietnam Women's Academy informed about the draft Project to Support Women's Access to Clean Water and Hygienic Toilets, which is expected to be implemented in the province. Representatives of departments, branches, communes and wards in the province assessed the role of the Women's Union at all levels in coordinating the construction of new rural areas, especially implementing environmental sanitation criteria; the current status of clean water use in rural areas; implementing the "3 clean" criteria and proposing solutions for implementation in the coming time.

Speaking at the workshop, Vice Chairwoman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Thi Hoang said: The project to support women in accessing clean water and hygienic toilets, if implemented, will contribute to improving the quality of life of rural women and children in particular, and rural people in general. Therefore, the Provincial Women's Union is requested to coordinate with the Vietnam Women's Academy to complete the draft project. Dong Nai Province also committed to the Central Union to continue to replicate the "3 clean" models and integrate these contents into the province's program.

Vice President of the Vietnam Women's Union Nguyen Thi Thu Hien requested the Women's Working Committee to collect all the contents of the presentations and discussions, especially the recommendations and proposals of the delegates to supplement and complete the draft National Target Program on New Rural Construction for the period 2026-2035. At the same time, advise the Presidium to develop effective implementation plans as soon as the National Target Program on New Rural Construction is approved.

Dong Nai Provincial Women's Union receives opinions and recommendations from sectors and localities to effectively organize assigned activities and tasks.
