In the announcement from the Organizing Committee, the invitation, veneration and worship of the heart relics of Bodhisattva Thich Quang Duc to Vietnam National Temple according to the 2025 United Nations Vesak Festival Project will not take place on May 3 due to "facilities not yet being met".
In the original plan, the heart relic of the famous monk was moved from its storage location at the State Bank of Vietnam in Ho Chi Minh City on Vo Van Kiet Street, District 1, to the Vietnam National Pagoda on 3/2 Street, District 10, for people to worship from 1:30 p.m. tomorrow.
According to the Organizing Committee, by the afternoon of May 2, 1,088 delegations with nearly 50,000 people had registered to worship the heart relic of Bodhisattva Thich Quang Duc at Vietnam National Pagoda. After postponing the plan, the time for the invitation and worship of this treasure will be announced by the Executive Committee of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha in Ho Chi Minh City when there are new developments.
The heart relics of Bodhisattva Thich Quang Duc and the Buddha relics (brought back from India this morning) are two treasures for people to worship during the 2025 Vesak celebration in Ho Chi Minh City. Up to now, the Buddha relics have been completed in decoration at Thanh Tam Pagoda located in the Buddhist Academy for people to visit and worship from 6:00 a.m. on May 3.
Venerable Thich Quang Duc, whose birth name was Lam Van Tuat, was born in 1897 in Van Ninh district, Khanh Hoa. On June 11, 1963, he doused himself in gasoline and set himself on fire at the intersection of Phan Dinh Phung Avenue and Le Van Duyet Street (now Nguyen Dinh Chieu - Cach Mang Thang Tam intersection) in Saigon, to protest the repression of Buddhism by the Ngo Dinh Diem government, witnessed by thousands of people and Buddhists.
The monk's heart was returned to the crematorium for many hours but did not burn, becoming a solid block like stone with its shape intact. The Venerables in the Inter-Sect Committee for the Protection of Buddhism decided to invite the immortal heart of Bodhisattva back to Xa Loi Pagoda for worship. After that, the heart relic of Bodhisattva Thich Quang Duc was brought to Viet Nam Quoc Tu and then kept at the State Bank branch in Ho Chi Minh City.
